My SO has serious hay fever, that has always been an issue.

We have lived at this house for a year and since we moved here he has ha breathing issues, but only in the bed room, he starts coughing and he weezes, but it is only in the bed room...what could cause allergies only in one room? I thought that if it is in one room in a house it is every where since the air circulates. BTW I live in a 1 story bungalo, so the rooms are very close together.

Does this make sense?

that *is* odd, lotta, but something similar happens to me as well if i don't take a shower before going to bed. i guess the pollen gets stuck in my hair and during bedtime gets into the sheets and pillows...

This is not "odd" at all. Where is the humidity coming from in your house(mold). What source of heating do you use?(dry heat/humid heat), is it electric or "other"?

Dry heat, basically electric, will play hell on sinus probs. I am now going through this problem yearly for the last two years. Kerosene, baseboard heat, fireplace wood heat.....i'm topsy tervy, and am now on allbuteral inhalers.

Can't wait for warm weather so I can air out the house and disinfect EVERY surface!

Regards,

Deepster

Susan:

He is able to sort of sleep in the living room he still tosses and turns; no hypo allergenic stuff...yet, I am gonna have to buy it now and toss my matress, its a pillow top. There is a window at the foot of the bed and on my side of the bed, dirty laundry doesnt go any where but the laundry room, and usually doesnt stay dirty long. THe bathroom is across the hall, there is a water leak in my daughters room, but I scrubbed the attic and we tarped the back of the roof where the leak is and I spread this painter stuff up there that is supposed to get rid of moisture, I am waiting for my landlord to get the roof fixed. We had a cat up until 4 days ago, I found her a new home because I thougt it was her, but then again I though last night, she went everywhere he should be nsick in the L-room too.

Deepster:

I have radiators, but I have t humidifiers that I use at night (bubber has hay fever too, but she hasnt been sick since last spring.

he is on Advent, Pro Air HFA, Allegra D, Singulair, Nasonex, and Claritin PRN. HE also takes Cymbalata. His mother has severe allergies and she is not affercted at all in my house, that is the weirdest to me, she has allergies to everything and is very sensitive to mold, dust, pollen, and antihistamines, she sees an allergist weekly because she has stopped breathing so much. All 3 kids have hay fever and the allergies to pollen etc, they all get sick at the same time and it is always the same symptoms it starts in May and ends in July, he was like that until we moved here a year ago, now he is miserable, when he breaths he whistles, e has seen 2 doctors and been to the ER several times for respiratory problems, I have tried uding a nebulizer on himg that I have for bubbers to open up his air ways, it doesnt work really.

My first thought was that there might be mold in that room somewhere. Mold makes my asthma act up horribly. It can be anywhere, even under the rug. (I hate rugs).

Susan has great advice about bed/pillow covers. They are a lifesaver, and you won't have to buy a new mattress. :) You will have to get used to sleeping on them though. ;)

I can't add much to what everyone else has said. I just wanted to say what first came to my mind.

I have hard wood floors which I just refinished a month ago we have area rugs in the living and diningh area every where else is throws which I wash and line dry every week. I have a hep vacuum, I bleach my pillows once a month I use clorox allergen reducer bleach. I change my bedding weekly as well. There isnt mold that we can find we used kilz base coat before painting and we scrubbed and scrubed and well you get the idea. I will look in to the covers as you guys mentioned.

I think he has asthma too, and he is a smoker, so maybe at night it builds up. I am trying to get him to see his mothers allergist, since one it could be genetic and two he controlled her allergies which where really bad.

It just makes no sense to me that he is fine in the living room that is across from the bed room

He needs a specialist I think

There could be some mold or mildew somewhere in that room. It is true that spores would circulate around the house but it would be much more concentrated in that room.

I've had allergies and asthma all my life. I never had a problem with spring allergies much... until now. Been sneezing my head off. Wonderful. Even my poor cats have been sneezing. I took one of them to the vet fearing they'd picked up a virus or something but the vet said there was no sign of infection at all and she suspected allergies. This would be the first spring my cats have ever done this. It's weird.

I recently read about allergies getting worse in people and pets. One of the explanations they gave is that if there's more CO2 in the air, then plants may be producing more pollens. But who knows, that could be a load of hooey.

My worst allergy season is late summer, early fall when the ragweed plant pollinates. It is an airborn pollen and is THE usual cause of hay fever during that time of year. Of course a lot of people blame the pretty goldenrod plant as the culprit because it starts to bloom yellow at this same time. But the goldenrod is likely not a source of allergy at all.

Oh yeah and, when I was young we (mom and me) had to live in a crappy apt. for awhile. My asthma was horrible during this time. Turns out there was mildew growing under the window in my bedroom. So sleeping in there was making me sick. The apt. building also had roaches. That can trigger asthma too. Luckily we didn't have to stay there long.

Then just a few years ago, we had to live in a crappy rental house. The place leaked water from the outside all over the place and it was just full of mold, rot and mildew. The landlord didn't give a shit. I was ALWAYS sick when we lived there.

Well that was probably more information than you were looking for. ;)

Lotta-

Kinda of an aside here, but did you know that Ventolin HFA and ProAir are the same product. Ventolin at Wmart is $9. The ProAir is I think $42. If you have insurance, this may not be an issue, but I don't and the the cost savings is tremendous!

First off, thanks guys for all the advice. I went up in the attic with several cans of kilz and bleach and sprayed the crap out of it the other day, I spread down more of the painters stuff that sucks up moisture around and checked the roof, the tarp has held up. I looked under all the windows in the BR for mildew, there isnt any and my bathroom is good too, I bought a new hepa filter for the vacuum and did the whole house..and he is getting better, much better. No wheezing the past 2 nights, he slept like a snoring baby. He is also in a better mood.

He is allergic to cats, thank god I found her a good home, and now he can breathe.

Can allergies make you mean?

Deepster, he has insurance...the lucky bastard lol. Plus these where actualy given to him in the doctors office.

He is going to see his moms allergist in a few weeks, so he will probably be given something new.

A few things-

My allergist put me on Prilosec. Apparently asthma attacks while sleeping can be caused by acid reflux irritating the passages. If that's the issue, elevating the head of the bed a little can help, too-like about an inch or so.

For me, claritin only works if it's in my system before I react.

Zyrtec works wonders for me, and it's over-the-counter.

Try Combivent for a rescue med if Albuterol isn't cutting it-it's albuterol and ipatropium bromide. Is niiice.

Advair comes in three doses-you can go up to 500/50.

Sinus rinsing can be done with a Neti Pot or a squeeze-bottle irrigator. Doing irrigation twice daily is drug free and quite effective.

HEPA filters are rather dear, but if you can get one, they're worth it. Make sure you buy one rated for the square footage of your bedroom.

When it gets warm enough, air conditioning helps a lot of people's asthma.

If you've taken everything else and your allergies are still going crazy, first take a shower, then take a full adult dose of liquid benadryl and go to bed.

Both the general crappiness of allergies and lack of air can cause crankiness. I once punched a hole in a wall in an anoxia rage...although putting holes in sheetrock is something I have a history of.
