People who don't understand mental illness suck

Maybe I shouldn't read the comments from this article. However, I was quite shocked with the comments there, such as "Just man up already you crybaby," "It seems like the classic 'over-parenting' thing."

I really can't imagine saying these kinds of things to someone who's depressed.

Sad that some people don't have a clue what it's like, and don't bother to even begin to understand.

Once you have your MI under control (or you are at least trying to control it), I'm of the opinion that you are way stronger than anyone out there who didn't go through all the s**t you did.

It'd be better if the poster of that entry never read those comments, but comments in semi-anonymous Internet settings do tend to be vile. I have no idea why people even bother making some of those comments. They just make you look stupid...

I didn't even read the link because I knew it would upset me.

I HATE it when people are dumb about mental illness.

Like, when they say things like "Just stay positive!"

Or say "Everyone feels sad sometimes!" when you've been suicidal for months with no sign of relief.

I'm with you, Tryp. I'm triggered as hell and already feel crazy enough. I do not like stupid internet people saying stupid internet things about that which they don't understand. ;)

Tangentally related, I really hate the "armchair psychologist" version of this too--"your problem isn't as bad as your doctors and scars say it is, but I took a psych class in college so I know all about what you're going through, and you're exaggerating it." SHUT. UP.

hateHATE people who don't at least TRY to understand.

Oooh, I love "armchair psychologists." I still remember my past counsellor said that my emotional maturity had ceased growing since I was 6. Because I'm no different from a child, I remain self-centered and lack the sophistication to have empathy and compassion.

Take a look at the forums who talks about movies like Control (Joy Division , Ian curtis story). You will see many threads where people cant understand that he was very sick and dont care that the meds back in the 80s for epilepsy have many terrible side effects.

Thats why I stfu about my MI and my meds. Most people cant understand. Why bother telling them.

Tom Cruise judged Brook Shield because she took Paxil for a while , ON TV ! Dont you have to be sure of what you are saying when you say things like that ? He is an actor, not a PDOC !

Of course you can tell me that I should talk about it so people can understand us. Some will probably say that its like a coming out, you feel better after. Sorry, I saw people being judged and loose all their credibility because they told everyone that they were using lithium , Effexor, or other meds.

This is aint about boys and girls, this is about brain. People are afraid about brain problems.

i did not read the comments, (internot idiocy makes me hyperventilate,) but Cary Tennis' response, though still not ideal, was pretty good: "Among [your] resources is courage. If you have come this far, you obviously have courage. Call upon it now." for advice gleaned on the internet, not so bad.

Oh, my pardon. I meant i did not read the comments that were posted to the article in the link. The "man up already" and all of that. I just read the original post and the advice.

Crazyboards is one of the only places i read almost entire threads. This place is an oasis of clever topics, well thought out replies and genuinely funny rants. I definitely know what you mean.

Maybe I shouldn't discriminate others... but Tom Cruise is a Scientologist too.

That's almost like being told "It'll get better".

For most mental illnesses, it WILL get better... with the correct treatment, if the diagnosis is correct, and other crap doesn't rain down on your life.

Even 10% improvement beats 0% improvement or worsening!

Of course, the folks who mean "It will all blow over and you'll be as good as new in no time!" still need a good whacking with a clue-by-four, but it's possible there's no cure for them, even then.

I thoroughly agree with you. After naiively browsing the internet for information on MI at the beginning of my diagnosis period years ago, I quickly learned to stay away from any media article that allows responses, or to discuss MI on any forum that isn't primarily for that purpose, even if they have a MI subforum.

Funny enough, I had one guy at this one forum trying to convince me that to solve all my mental health problems, I should just take some LSD. That was one of the humorous responses. The others include what you said, and of course the " "meds are for "wuss"ies" response.

I get angry at him while reading it as well, because I can relate to it and I'm angry at myself.

Another thing that got me angry is that he's like me.. but has money.

I'd say that's why everyone replied the way they did; sitting at home behind their computers telling themselves their lives would be better "if only" and then they meet the guy who has all the "if onlys" and is still just as miserable. They get angry at him because they want to know that in his situation they'd be making a fortune. Oh god protect anyone who should tell me my problems are not a result of my circumstance but of my own inadequacies!
