witchywoman
I started Lexapro 5 mg on May 2nd. My depression and anxiety got worse but I've read that those could just be start up effects. So, on this past friday, the 8th, I started taking 10 mg, and I've gotten even worse. This has been a terrible weekend. I just feel so bad. No motivation, tired, sad, weak, just plain shit. Is this something that I should wait out or should I quit. I see my pdoc on Friday, but was wondering your opinions on whether I should see him sooner, or give it some time to kick in. I've been on Lexapro before and dont remember this happening. Im worse than I was before I started it. Anyway, thanks for hearing me. Im just at a loss right now and just want to feel better. tryp
Hey there, Sorry you're having such a rough time - it sucks when the meds that are supposed to make you better just make things worse. The general party line for anti-depressants is that you need to give them at least four weeks, preferably six, before you can judge how they're going to work with your system. I think if you can handle it, the best thing to do would be to try to stick it out at least until your next scheduled appointment - personally, I like to make sure I've given meds a solid try just so that I don't end up right back on them a few months down the road. However, you're the only one who can know if the situation you're in is intolerable. If you can't tolerate what's going on now, there's no shame in calling your pdoc and letting him know. Anyway, I'm sorry you're feeling so rotten and I hope things start to look up soon, one way or another.
Artemisia
Unfortunately, the initial side effects may return each time you increase your dose... Ideally, you should give it 6-8 weeks on a stable dose to see if it'll work--if you can stand it that long, that is...
water
Hi there, I just started Lexapro as well and also had a very hard time at first. Lots of anxiety - particularly at night. I was also very tired all day probably because I had a terrible time falling asleep. After reading tons of info on the web I decided to start taking Lexapro at night. It has made a huge difference. I am sleeping better and have much less anxiety during the day. Also, as everyone is saying, the side effects are starting to ease up after around 4 weeks on the med. (I started at 5 mg. for a week, then went up to 10 mg.) Good luck!!
bluelikejazz
It will take 6-8 weeks to take effect, but if you feeling worse is a side effect it should let up in about two weeks I think. I ended up having to stop lexapro because it made me worse, but that's rare. At least hang in there until your next appointment (unless you start getting suicidal thoughts that weren't there before, then call pdoc). Just my opinion, etc.

Im super anxious this morning on top of being depressed. It just really sucks. I've never had this type of reaction to a med before.
tryp
That does really suck. Hopefully pdoc will have something helpful to say and/or pull the med. Maybe it just isn't the one for you (potential reality TV show a la The Bachelor?)
