Guest CCB
oh lamictal.. how I loved you. and then you turned on me. I've heard all about the rash. I figured a rash is a rash. NO no - it's not. no one warned me the rash was really giant painful itchy welts covering your entire body in places giant welts should never be. so I was a good girl, listened to my pdoc and went to the ER. they didn't run tests, dodn't even give me a good looking over and sent me home with orders to take aton of benadryl and get a babysiter since I'll be too out of it to watch my kids. please oh wise ones, please tell me there is something to help this rash, this unstoppable itch. it hurts, it burns and trust me, isn't doing jack for my depression. dancesintherain
I might put in a call to pdoc to give an update on what the ER said. I'm a little worried that they didn't look at it very much. I'm not sure what's typical for the rash, but I would have expected a little bit more than the treatment that you received. Maybe not. But your pdoc would probably want to know. I'm thinking about going to a different hospital today if I can find someone to watch my kids for me. anyone know if its normal to hurt? I took my usual sleeping pill but the pain and itchying woke me up. running on 3 hours of sleep at the moment. urgh.
AnneMarie
See if you can get in with a dermatologist ASAP, preferably one who is familiar with SJS.
Guest CCB
See if you can get in with a dermatologist ASAP, preferably one who is familiar with SJS. I think its too late for that - waiting for the sitter to show up and I'm off to the ER again (a different, much much better one) My throat is sore and the inside of my mouth is now covered in welts too. *sigh* I'll keep you all updated if you like. AirMarshall
The standard treatment for SJS is IV steroids. Lots of IV steroids. We can't tell here exactly what you have, but if the benadryl hasn't stopped the progression after a few hours, AND it is spreading to your throat, then a return to the ER immediately is mandatory. Anything that that threatens the airways is an emergency. Be sure that they are made fully aware that you are taking Lamictal and that SJS is a possibility. Get well quick. a.m.
jillista
Yes, I hope that you have been to the ER. I got "The Rash" from Lamictal, but got on steroids and a topical cream right away and it never got to the point that you are describing. It was bad, but it didn't get to my throat - keep on until somebody gives you more than the benadryl.

Good news! its not a reaction to the medication! so no SJS for me! Bad news! It's freaking CHICKEN POXS. I was having problems swallowing and got a friend to watch my kids as I went to a much better different ER who rushed me back and did a ton of tests. yep, just run of the mill chicken poxs. my pdoc still is asking me to stay off the lamictal but will be talking about other medications this friday with me. clearly I've never had chicken poxs so I had no idea what I was looking for and just assumed it ws THE rash. luckliy no, but unluckily I'm still covered itchy painful welts
jillista
Wow, glad that it isn't SJS! I bet the chicken pox as an adult sucks, though - hope you're feeling better soon!
Guest CCB
oh the lies the ER told me.. the lies! I've on day 3 of another hospital visit as it IS SJS and this, this is sometime I wouldn't wish on anyone. bewteeen the pain and blood and oozing, the fact my drs have cut me cold turkey from all my meds isn't helping. I'm a big emotional gobby mess right now. I give up - id rather be crazy and then in pain like this and crazy. I hurt so badly, I look even worse. Littlewing
Really hope you're feeling better CCB. I also take Lamictal and constantly live in fear of developing The Rash...it's the only drug that has worked for me so far without other horrid side effects. I hope you're getting the right medical treatment now, and lots of it!
littlemelblue
just to clarify for people.. the rash has a warning beforehand.. super swollen lymph nodes and sometimes symptoms like a upper respitory infection generally show up before the rash does. i loved the stuff but man its got a bite to for some people.
