Here I am, awake at 2:30am, and I'll tell you why. I took my meds after my dinner at 6pm. That included my Lithium, which was only the second time I've taken it, 450 mg. By about 6:30, when I had to drive my daughter home from dance, I started getting a little "tired". By the time I got home, I was extremely tired, couldn't walk straight, couldn't see straight, and was slurring my speech. I still had to get my daughter her shower and ready for bed. It was awful. I was in bed and asleep by 7pm, with my daughter. Is this normal for Lithium? Could it be because of one of my other meds I took (Geodon 80 mg, Klonopin .5 mg, Lexapro 5 mg, Trileptal 600 mg)? The Geodon has made me sleepy in the past but not with the problems walking, seeing and talking. Im pretty sure it's the Lithium, but why would it do that, unless it was a side effect or reacted with one of my other meds? What are your thoughts?

Lithium can make you a little sleepy, especially when starting. This seems a little exagerated. Give it some time. Taking it with a meal is a good idea. Be sure to drink plenty of water thru the day, like 1-2 liters at your dosage.

Note that you are taking a bunch of other meds that can be sedating. There is always the potential for additive effects. However I think this will ease up in a week or two.

***You can always take it close to bed time and be sleepy while you sleep. ;)

Thanks for the reply! So this isn't something I should be worried about? If it passes, I'll stick through it. I doubt it's the Lithium, but I am feeling better. Placebo effect, I don't know. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Yep, could just be lithium on top of all your other meds. Lithium made me sleepy at first, not at all anymore. Give it time! And just plan accordingly in the meantime. (Eg I know that I have to be ready for bed with no chores left to do when I take Seroquel, because once it kicks in, I am OUT.)

As AM said, combining meds can lead to extra sedation. While lith never sedated me at all (I was up to 900 mg a day, at one point I was just dropping it all at night and doing OK) the geodon just blippin' killed me. Come to think of it, I may have been on both at once, though I may have been back on topamax while on geodon.

Many of these meds have depressive CNS effects--they depress your central nervous system, like alcohol does, making you lethargic, tired. Add more in and whammo, you just can't take it.

Dose timing is a big key. I couldn't handle geodon long enough; either I was awake all night or literally falling asleep at work (and that after 1200 mg of caffeine too...) Take the lith before bed, split doses, whatever you can, see how it works.
