Topamax overdose

Guest stupid girl

Yes my name says it all. Last night I got very drunk and decided I would try taking a bunch of Topamax. I'm not even prescribed it anymore, I now take Seroquel.

I dont even know how much I took but it was a few hundred milligram I would say. Now I am scared. Can I die? What should I do? I know I'm stupid, no-one has to tell me.

If this happened last night, it's been almost 24 hrs by now, right? I think if anything bad were going to happen to you, it probably already would have. But if you're feeling weird, or just really anxious about it, or whatever, call the poison peeps and see what they have to say.

If you aren't dead by now you probably won't. Topamax has a half life of 21 hours, so it will be out of your system in 4 days.

Large doses usually aren't fatal, but are more likely when combined with other meds. One person ingested about 100 gram GRAMS (thats about two handfuls) and survived.

Below are typical OD symptoms. If you start feeling worse, go to the ER. Call your pdoc first thing and let him know what you did. He needs to know for general purposes. a.m.

i got wasted four days ago and took half a bottle. ive done it in the past and i had a crazy trip. but this time i didnt react well. i didnt take into account my new meds. i kept passing out and i got really violent and paranoid. i attacked my boyfriend when he called the ambulance because i thought he was trying to get rid of me. i was horrible and im still really shaken by the whole thing. i have never been so scared in my life. i seriously thougt that the paramedics were trying to kill me or something. i think i may have gotten a concussion in the process. they didnt pump my stomach or anything though. i guess they just figured i was a crazy drunk bitch. anyways my perception of time off, i cant concentrate or finish my thoughts, and i forget where i am and what im doing for a couple of seconds. not to mention my motor skills are off as well and im really fatigued. has anyone gone through anything like this and how long did the symptoms last?

Hopefully by this writing your symptoms have subsided. Between the alcohol/meds/large dose it's no surprise why you felt like a mental train wreck. I've never had a problem like that, but I have taken way too much Lexapro one time and it turned me into jello for 2-3 days.

It seems that most folks here do have their facts straight. Have you heard of the Prescriber Information Sheet? It comes with the med. It tells you a lot, should you read it.

The [link=https://www.ortho-mcneilneurologics.com/ortho-mcneilneurologics/shared/pi/topamax.pdf#zoom=100]Topamax Prescriber Information[/link] says 400mg/day is the max manufacturer recommendation. In reality, it is not unusual for higher amounts to be prescribed if there is efficacy.

The PI on OD:

10 OVERDOSAGE

Overdoses of TOPAMAX have been reported. Signs and symptoms included convulsions, drowsiness, speech disturbance, blurred vision, diplopia, mentation impaired, lethargy, abnormal coordination, stupor, hypotension, abdominal pain, agitation, dizziness and depression. The clinical consequences were not severe in most cases, but deaths have been reported after poly-drug overdoses involving TOPAMAX.

Topiramate overdose has resulted in severe metabolic acidosis [see Warnings and Precautions (5.4)].

A patient who ingested a dose between 96 and 110 g topiramate was admitted to hospital with coma lasting 20 to 24 hours followed by full recovery after 3 to 4 days.

In acute TOPAMAX® overdose, if the ingestion is recent, the stomach should be emptied immediately by lavage or by induction of emesis. Activated charcoal has been shown to adsorb topiramate in vitro. Treatment should be appropriately supportive. Hemodialysis is an effective means of removing topiramate from the body.

Yeah, no kidding. Like everyone's been saying, fairly high doses are fairly normal. 400 mg/day is the maximum recommended, but last time I checked it was approved for up to 800 mg/day, and there have been people on this site prescribed 600-800. I myself was on 500 mg/day for a few months, with minimal side effects, even (although my brain does get along with Topamax unusually well).

To be fair, though, for certain purposes, it's fairly uncommon to go over 200 mg/day. The dosing for migraine prevention is generally dramatically lower than for seizure control. Still ridiculous to run around claiming that 200's the limit, though. Which Stacia already covered, but I've got nothing better to do right now than add to it. Heh.

I agree with Nalgas. I take Topamax for migraine prevention (though I will take any mood stabilization it may give me) and I recently was bumped up to 300 mg to cover bioavailability issues with the generic brands. My insurance wouldn't cover the brand, and the generic 200 mg was giving me breakthrough migraines. So I saw a neurologist and he bumped up my dosage. Other than some aphasia issues popping up again since the first time I started the drug three years ago, I am doing great. My short term memory, dear I say, is even a bit better than before.

I accidentally doubled my dose last night and ended up taking 800mg instead of 400mg and didn't notice until my whole body went numb and tingly. Now today, which is the next morning I'm incredibly lethargic and having a terrible time focusing and concentrating on anything.

Y'know, I find that Topamax in large quantities makes me feel really dumb...

Notice much?

BTW, for your future pill-popping references, I find that if I take a doc-approved extra topamax, it takes about four hours to really get rid of my breakthrough headache...so if you're going to be partying on this stuff, plan on taking it early?

Oy, some people...

I overdosed just this past weekend i took 55 50mg topamax and 26 10mg concerta and on a daily basis i tage 300mg topamax and 40mg adderall. I think because i take such a large dose i didnt really have much side effects. I got fluids but that was it. I really dont remember much at the hosp though. Its not a fun experience after. Some people just have a higher tolerance than others. I was very shocked!! When i first started my meds again i jupemed from none to 300 instantly and i remember getting very tingly and like i couldnt function at all and this past weekend i didn't really have any of that i just was really tired. I was more shocked though that the hosp didn't want to pump my stomach.
