I am also inquiring about concerta, and prozac. My 14 year old son has been diag with depression separation anxiety, panic attacks, anxiety. He is very smart, but has a hard time in school ( the norm). They are trying him on prozac for the anxiety and concerta for possible add adhd. I feel there is a bigger picture to look at and I am not sure about these meds. Any advice?

Hey,

I'm sorry to hear that your son is having a hard time. However, this generally tends to be a first person site, which means that we prefer to talk to the person dealing with the diagnosis. This is mainly because it's REALLY difficult to get an accurate idea of someone's situation through a third party account.

Your question wasn't very specific, so I don't really know what you're looking for, but I can say that if a doctor has diagnosed your son and recommended these medications, it is probably good to give them a try. As a rule of thumb, it generally takes 6-8 weeks for a new medication to fully begin to work and for the patient to get a good idea of what the med will do for them longterm, so I would advise that you give these meds, and the doctor, at least two months to settle down before you change the medications.

Additionally, therapy is something I can recommend without really knowing anything about your son's condition. Therapy in addition to medication can be very helpful for most, if not all, psychiatric problems.

Maybe someone else will chime in, but again, it's really hard for us to say anything about anyone who isn't sitting here talking to us themselves.
