Is it taboo to ask for a DAW on the Ambien script?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

My major problem in my Bipolar is my sleep. The only way I can get to sleep everynight is to deprive my body of food and fluid for 6-8 hours before bedtime or my Teva Generic Ambien and 400 mg Seroquel will not knock me out (if it takes more than four hours, I take one of my 1mg Xanax p r n, but I hate wasting those for sleep.) It's caused a bit of weight gain because after my meds kick in, I eat before bed because I am so hungry. After looking through many of these threads, it seems like a lot of you dislike the Teva Generic. Another thing, I was switched to Ambien 10mg Generic after Ambien CR failed me. Should I come right out and ask for a Dispense As Written on my Ambien, or wait and see what the doctor thinks? Whenever I complain about sleep, she always boosts the Seroquel, but honestly, those boosts aren't working.

Your opinion is really appreciated!

As long as you have given the generic ambien a try, then no, it's not unreasonable to discuss this with your pdoc. You always have the option of asking the pharmacist for a brand name dispensing if you are willing to pay the difference between what your insurance pays and the full price.

Good sleeping! a.m.

It's your body - you get to decide what to put in it.

The pharmacy I go to uses the Apotex generic. I've never taken Ambien brand or the Teva version, so I can't compare, but I haven't had issues with the Apotex generic.

Maybe that's why my Ambien doesn't work like it used to--I used to find it very soothing and relaxing too. I now use various generics (whatever the drugstore has on hand I guess).

That could be the difference, and I'd like to try the "real" Ambien again, but I just cannot afford it. sad.gif

Good for you if you can, tho. I think the FDA should look into this and make sure that generics have the same effects as the originals!!

My pharmacy has been dispensing the "Dr. Reddy's" Brand of generic Ambien. I have found that it works fine.

I have been on the various generics, including the Apotec- I prefer the Apo, and will have to make sure I get it next time.

Have your pdoc write on the script, specifying which particular brand of generic you prefer. Mine did that. The first month the pharmacy obeyed it. The refill came along and they forgot!
