Priapism a Side-Effect of Prochlorperazine (Compazine)

Recommended Posts

;) Started prochlorperazine last night and woke up about 3 AM with pain in my penis! I had an erection that lasted more than an hour and I'm not sure how long I had the erection to begin with that night. Just woke up because it hurt!!

So if you're prescribed prochlorperazine better known as Compazine then be warned the FDA is run by a bunch of sadistic bastards who approved a drug that could make your dick fall off from gangrene!!

I am really glade I don't have to go to the emergency room for this!

No, you probably do need to go to the ER for this and so you can get a rapid urology referral for followup. This can be recurrent. And while, yes, priapism can be secondary to medications, there are other causes, including perhaps other medications that you've been on for a long time. Temporal correlation doesn't equal causation.

At a bare minimum, you need to call your GP's on-call service.

As you wrote, "I'm not sure how long I had the erection to begin with that night." 4 hours is the tissue damage line at which it's essential to go to the ER, yes. If it's early on, they're going to try all the conservative interventions before the more invasive ones. One of the reasons to follow up on this now: if it's recurrent, there are prescriptions for prn medications that you can take at home to treat while waiting to see uro/ER/whomever, and other things you can do at home to treat before going to the ER (within a specified time window.) That would be something to talk about with the ER doc. Or your GP. I'm not going into them. because you need to discuss this with your GP or the person who's treating you.

If it's just too awful to go into the ER, I understand. This is soooo one of those "print out the thread" moments.

Sounds horrible, Buddha. I'm glad it resolved.

Hi Silver, LOL call my GP!? I'm on county medical assistance, I'd have better luck hitting the lottery and I can't even afford a lottery ticket. Emergency room visits are not covered either.

I'm not on any meds except the prochlorperazine at the moment. I'm hypersensitive to medication, I can't really take anything on a daily basis. However, considering how damn crazy I've become ... I thought I better try this.

I was going to try the prochlorperazine again tonight but I can certainly wait to see my doc Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks

Priapism is a legit emergency room visit with the potential for permanent tissue damage. This wouldn't be abuse or even anxious overuse of the emergency system. The earlier you intervene, the earlier (and less painful) it is to treat. If you've qualified for county med assistance, then you might be able to qualify (relatively easily) for charity care at the hospitals in your area that will do that.

At least think about calling your doc's service or answering machine or whatever and leaving a message. She or her office would rather know sooner rather than later.

Good luck --

Listen dude Priapism is no laughing matter I just got off a medical leave of absense from work because I had it. I went 3 days yes I said,"3 days" with it before I called my GP then wounded up driving myself to the hospital and undergoing a painful and I mean PAINFUL operation right in the ER .

Lets just say 20 needles in my penis all size 21 and above to relieve the pressure. I wound up having 2 blocked arteries meaning BLOOD CLOTS. Docters say one more week the would have moved upwards and killed me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would have died with a hard on in the coffin.

So run don't walk to the er no joking

A survior's story
