unipolarbear
I did a search and didn't find anything one this but maybe I'm just freaking out (again) [i think I need more Geodons]. Does anyone else have trouble actually swallowing the cocktails we're all on? I have developed a sour stomach over the last week and feel like I could puke each time. Saturday, I actually did puke them right up. I usually take them with (innocuous) milk (I'm not lactose intolerant), but I gag a lot and feel sick afterwards. How do you all take your cocktails? rowen
Are you having issues swallowing or keeping them down? I couldn't quite tell by your description. If it's swallowing itself, there could be something neurological going on. Or it could be psychological - you've gagged on them before, so now you associate the gagging with pill taking and you gag every time. If you're having trouble keeping them down, that's another thing. Milk is pretty hard on the digestive system, even if you're not lactose intolerant. Adult humans aren't really designed to consume it. I currently take everything on an empty stomach with a swig of water. That seems to cause the least issues for me. For things that I've taken in the past that have required food, I stick to rice, piece of fruit, toast, etc. - something easy. And I spread out taking pills. Not possible to do this with all pills, but it can help with stomach issues.
bluelikejazz
I always take pills by taking a mouthful of water and then throwing the pills in. Maybe that would help?
null0trooper
How do you all take your cocktails? Load 'em up, take a mouthful of liquid, and tilt my head back while swallowing. That takes a bit of practice, but my multivitamins tend to be sized for use as a veterinary supply. One trick that works for a number of people is to swallow the pills along with a carbonated drink. It feels a bit wierd the first time, but it works well. Worst thing to do: wash an uncoated, nasty-tasting, tongue-numbing pill down with hot coffee. That's so very much NOT what you want dissolving in your mouth.
Phoenix_Rising
Worst thing to do: wash an uncoated, nasty-tasting, tongue-numbing pill down with hot coffee. That's so very much NOT what you want dissolving in your mouth. Truer words have n'er been spoken. I take between 5-8 pills at a time. I throw them in my mouth, take a drink of water and sort of "throw" the water and pills to the back of my throat. TBH, I think this is more of a strange habit than a good way to take pills. I also have days that I just can't take the whole handfull in one try, so I divide it up. Peace, Phoenix
olga
Two suggestions: I am a firm believer in taking pills with food. If you are taking meds in the morning, than you need to try some toast, or a bagel, or cereal. If cow's milk is giving you a sour stomach, try rice milk or soy milk. Maybe half a cup of yogurt. I just don't think pills on an empty stomach is ever a good idea. As to swallowing pills, elderly people often have this difficulty. I hang out with an old guy who went through a period of trouble swallowing, and you might try putting the pill in your mouth with some water and then lowering your chin instead of throwing your head back. A gerontologist told me that dropping your head makes the opening at the back of the mouth bigger. Anyway, it works for my old guy, so I pass it along. olga
gizmo
My father has to take some of the foulest tasting medication on earth, and his swallow mechanism is compromised. He gets his pills scattered on applesauce. One pill per spoonful, and all goes down easy. No foul taste, no problems swallowing, no tummy problems. If you aren't an applesauce person, try yogurt or pudding.
Mayteana
Your post was a little confusing. You started taking about having trouble swallowing, but then spoke more about stomach issues. Those are two separate issues. If a sour stomach is what's going on, try taking your meds with an actual meal instead of just milk. If it's the actual swallowing, there's a few ways to go. You could see if any of your meds come in liquid form instead of pills. Or - as long as you aren't taking anything that's extended release - you can crush the pills up and mix them into something. I remember applesauce being popular as a kid - but pudding tastes better! My cocktail right now doesn't have any large pills so I take them with whatever. At one point I was taking like 20 pills and 5 or 6 of them were huge. That was a process. Usually I'd take a few pills with some bottled water, sip some hot tea, have some oatmeal. Wash, rinse, repeat until they were all gone. ~ May
Daenerys
I usually take my pills with a diet fizzy drink, one pill at a time; any more than one at a time usually causes me to gag. Another thing I have to remind myself is to take my time - it's not a race to finish swallowing them. Keep an eye on any patterns relating to them, and adjust your routine accordingly - for example, if you find that you often feel sick taking them on an empty stomach, try having them with a snack or meal and see if that helps things. Conversely, if taking them with food is a problem, try taking them by themselves. I'd think about swapping the milk for something lighter, like water. When I've taken meds with milk in the past it's made me feel quite nauseous, as has taking them with fruit juice.
unipolarbear
You guys are the greatest! Indeed, I have tried taking them with a fizzy drink ( diet cherry coke is my fav ) and it worked beautifully. Also, taking a few spoonfuls of cottage cheese first (also my fav) is very helpful. Finally, I WAS rushed as I was leaving for work and trying to throw down a cocktail of meds and supplements. Not anymore.... Thanks for all your feedback -- you're the best! Anelize
Sometimes a thicker sort of drink like a yogurt smoothie works well to take pills with as well. Also taking them with something sweet. I can't take mine with plain water. I use sweet tea, and take 2 or 3 at a time, until they are all taken. I take them all with some sort of food....cereal in the morning, lunch, and a piece of cheese and crackers at bedtime.
DarkendHour
I know what your going through. I have to take pills twice a day. 6 in the am and 12 in the pm.. ok so thats more pills than I thought, I just recounted them, thought I only took 16 (must have stuck to a number before an increase). This doesn't include if I get migraines or anything else during the day. I am to the point where I have to take one at a time, and even then some times I end up having to run to the bathroom to get sick either after just taking a few or after they are all down and I think I'm good to go. Some times it is a stop and go process because of the gaging. I try to take them with apple sauce or pudding but that doesn't even work some times. I generally can take as much time as I need to when taking them, unless I'm in the hospital.. then they try getting you to take them all at once!!! You should see the dirty looks I get when I tell them I have to take one at a time, and that they have to give me the apple sauce my parents supply them with for me! The best thing you can do is focus on getting one pill down at a time, don't think about having to get them all down (and keeping them down). As far as trying to take soda with them... Am I the only one who's mouthful of soda fizzes up like crazy making a bunch of foam and just makes it harder to swallow the pills?
