spencer513
Hi I am new here but have some questions. I have had an ileostomy for several years. I am currently "trying" to be treated for depression. I was on Prozac for 4 weeks, no change at all. My doctor now has me on Pristi( 2 weeks into the medicine) I. My concern is that so far I haven't felt much different ( seem to itch some) then I did 3 months ago, even before trying any anti-depressant. I am finding the "shell" in my pouch but there still seems like there is medicine in the pill...that it is not the shell of the pill. I have been reading online that people with ileostomies shouldn't take time release medicine because the medicine is not absorbed. My doctor assures me that the medicine is being absorbed, because the medicine starts being absorbed in the beginning of the small intestine therefore I am getting the medicine. I guess I am wondering if anyone else has an ileostomy and is on Pristiq and if the medicine is helping. Any and all comments would be appreciated. Thank you! mudpuppy
This sounds like something you should discuss with your pdoc, asap. He needs to know that you are finding seemingly undigested pills.
Silver
Discuss this with your GI doc and with your pharmacist. 2 weeks is pretty early days, so I wouldn't write this drug off yet.

Guest janice
I am currently taking pristiq and have an ileostomy also. I have the same issue. What I have been doing is peeling part of the outer shell off with a knife and cutting the pill in half. That seems to help a bit, but I am still seeing the pieces coming thru at times. I try to eat before taking it, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I am only on my third week and my doc wants me to take this for 2 months before we try something else. Previously I was on Sarafem, which is the same as Prozac but it didn't work well for me.
Magicaldancer
I have an Ileostomy and I have problems with time release pills all around. I cant take anything that it Time Released. you may want to talk to this with you PDOC. I did because I had problems like you with other meds like you are with the prisiq
Anelize
I can't take time released pills because of my gastric bypass. Effexor, is similar to Pristiq, and comes in a non-time released form. That's what I take.
AirMarshall
I forgot to post last week.... I check the PI sheet and Pristiq is delivered in about 7 hours. So you can consider how fast is your gut? If you have a fast system and it takes a bolus of food substantially less than 7 hours to pass, then you should consider talking with your pdoc about swithing to normal release capsules. If you are presently opening the delayed release capsules, you are throwing money away paying for the technology and not getting the benefits. Switch back to normal release tabs. cheers, a.m.
