lysergia
BPAD and schizophrenia share genetic roots is this news? i dunno. i feel too stupid to properly understand it today but it looks interesting.
null0trooper
[link=http://www.nimh.nih.gov/science-news/2009/schizophrenia-and-bipolar-disorder-share-genetic-roots.shtml" target="_blank]BPAD and schizophrenia share genetic roots[/link] is this news? i dunno. There's been a number of studies suggesting a strong genetic component to both disorders, so that part may not be news. I think the news is that as the genetic researchers narrow the list of paths to explore they're not running into dead end after dead end. Also, that some of the screwy immunological aspects of schizophrenia may not be so screwy after all.
Artemisia
I don't think the overlap in genetic markers for schizophrenia and BPAD per se is new.
nalgas
Oh look, people already said what I was first thinking when I read it. I'm sure I've seen stuff before about there being potential or suspected links like that, but I don't think the stuff I personally had read had been as thorough as this one or found as many specific connections as they seem to have found. It kind of makes me wonder how much other stuff like that they'll turn up the more they dig into the genetic side of things, both in terms of finding the "causes" of various conditions and how different ones are related, whether it's backing up stuff we've already observed being frequently comorbid/running in families with related conditions or discovering new interrelations that haven't previously been found. The way some of that stuff works on low levels like that is just neat.
