I'm new to the forum after lurking for a little while and think this is a great place to get information...

I'm actually inquiring for my boyfriend who has been recently diagnosed sz.

He was started out on what I believe is a low dose of Risperdol (1 mg./day) which he took for a month with what he says was little effect (I didn't see any effect either). He canceled his p-doc appt. but went back a couple months later and they gave him 2 mg. a day. Now he says if he takes it at night he stays up until 4 in the morning but when he takes it in the day he gets drowsy and has to sleep. He's only been on this dose for 2 weeks but doesn't like it and will see his p-doc in two more weeks to evaluate. He also says that his weird pains are now also occuring in his sleep which wasn't the case before. I can't say I see any positive impact on his ability to concentrate, speech, mood, etc.

How quickly can one expect to see what the "typical" effects (good and bad) will be to Risperdol? Is he just seeing the bad now with perhaps better to come in the next few weeks?

It seems most everyone here is on a med "cocktail" of sorts....is it unfair to expect Risperdol alone to really help?

Thanks, everyone.

Thanks Lanhua - it helps to have some kind of timeframe for him to keep in mind as he's trying this out.

And - I see you're taking several meds...how did you come about getting that combination? Slowly adding one at a time...? Adding to get rid of side effects or to get some added benefit?
