I'm interested in knowing if anyone else actually still takes a Typical antipsychotic. Feel free to talk about why you made the switch to or from Typical antipsychotics.

Right now I am on Fluphenazine (Prolixin). I made the switch because either the Atypical's didn't work well enough or I got a really bad side effect from it.

Edit= How in the heck did I forget to put Haloperidol in there? (The site I got the list from didn't list it?)

I tried most of the atypicals (seroquel, risperdal, zyprexa, invega, and geodon) and they either didnt work or i had problems. I switched to a typical (haldol, which you left out of your quiz), and havent had any serious problems yet. minor tremor, but risperdal did that to me too.

I don't know how I forgot Haldol.. its one of the two Typicals I've been on. I was at I think 10mg or 15mg of Haldol when they pulled me off of it. It worked really well for me, but the risk was just too big at that dosage. I had tremors pretty bad at times while on it.

I use the 'typicals' intermittently/episodically. I find them more effective for psychosis. My psychiatrist is not shy about the dosing, either, so it's not a matter of underdosing the atypicals.

I'm not using them for mood stabilization. I'm using them for psychosis due to mood (generally.) Sometimes I will use them as an emergency anti-anxiety med, not very often.

I found out today that there are no atypical antipsychotics on my county's approved pharma list-- none.

Wow that is strange to me. Atypicals are usually viewed to be safer than Typicals because the risk of side effects are less from them. If anything I would have thought that the Typicals wouldn't be on the approved list.

I used to take chlorpromazine for racing thoughts, and hypomania to stabilise my mood (one med to stop me crashing into depression another to take care of the hypomania). It gave me EPS and a mass of pain, and stopped working at a low dose so had to come off and went onto Zyprexa which was no good.

So off all AP's now.

I take an atypical for racing thoughts and to help with mood. It's helped me so much, basically given me a life again. THough I think I've always been bipolar II and in need of chemical assistance for my out of whack chemical imbalances. I can think straight and fucntion on Abilify thank God. Interesting results on the poll, thanks for starting this thread DarkenedHour. ;)

I started off taking Zyprexa, but the side effects were bleurgh...so now I've been prescribed Trifluoperazine (the one I can never remember how to spell!), but I've not tried it yet. I only took the Zyprexa on an as needed basis anyway, so I'm not sure how the Trifluoperazine is going to work for me yet.
