Using genetic testing and brain imaging to pick crazy meds

Recommended Posts

According to this article, CAMH (Toronto) is said to be one of the first hospitals which will use the combination of genetic testing and PET scans to help picking crazy meds. For instance, the article says, these tests can determine whether to use body-fattening atypicals or tremor-inducing typicals. (Ah, don't we all love antipsychotics?)

I don't know whether it is the "first" hospital, but I'm sure this is a godsend for many of us ... well - at least somewhat better than our good old pick-a-random-drug method.

What do you think?

Oh yeah... I've forgot Amen's clinic.

Didn't know about the tumor risk with typicals.

I was quite surprised too when I read "tumour". Re-read it, it's "tremor". Wait, don't antagonists of dopamine receptors cause these Parkinson-like symptoms in general? Okay, I'm confused.

Yeah Tremors is definitely right.

I have like....horrible shaking attacks and it's been proven to be cause by Seroquel.

Course I'd rather shake then drive off a bridge...again.

I'd like to see these image tests though...better then the med-go-round.

Wellllll,

This is less than it seems, IMO.

The genetic testing is to check liver enzymes and for slow/fast metabolizers. Which is good, and established technology.

The PET scans will NOT be used to choosed medication, or diagnose. The two PET scans will be performed AFTER dx has been made the old fashioned way and after a medication has been chosen the old fashioned way. They will look for drug perfusion and brain deficits.

I would like to see them using the PET scans for diagnoses, but apparently they are not far enough along. Still, I think this is one more step in the experimental research to develop a diagnostic test and standards for drug effectiveness.

a.m.

In people with schizophrenia, the genetic tests can indicate if they are likely to suffer severe tremors from a class of antipsychotic drugs.

That would be a lot better than the "take this and call me if tremors get bad" routine I'm oh so familiar with... by the way how do people call their doc's if they are alone and can't even hold a phone without dropping it?

The results from this study (or what ever they call it) should be interesting.

The day they can tell what meds will do ya good without extensive trial and error will be an awesome day!!!

That is interesting. Though I thought the typicals had a pretty body-fattening effect, too.
