has anyone switched from paxil to another ssri....

Recommended Posts

ive been on 50 mg of paxil cr for almost a year, and it has been really great overall, but the sedation is really frustrating. i'm wondering if anyone has switched from paxil to another SSRI for this reason and how the transition went. was there "discontinuation syndrome" (aka withdrawal)? did anything else work as well as paxil? i remember reading somewhere that paxil was the "most potent" SSRI, and i'm on kind of a high dose, so i worry that i won't get the same efficacy from anything else.

has anyone noted noticeably less sedation with other SSRIs compared to paxil?

I took Paxil and switched to Lexapro because, after a couple years, it didn't seem to be working. But, I was on a fairly low dose - 10mg. I did get some lethargy with it, for sure. When I started taking the Lexapro, I just stopped the Paxil cold turkey and there didn't seem to be any withdrawal issues. However, I ended up eventually being on 20mg of Lexapro...and after about a year, I started to sleep ALL - THE - TIME... it was a big problem. So... yeah, I don't know if that really answers your question... but that was the experience I had.

I switched from paxil to celexa due to sexual side effects. Switching directly from one SSRI to another isn't bad. Another time I went off paxil and not onto another SSRI was pretty rough but you don't have to worry about that.

If sedation is the problem you might want to try Zoloft. It' can be a little bit peppy because of the tiny dopamine hit it delivers.

I was on Paxil for about a week as a teenager and I was begging to be taken off because I had this weird combination of being a zombie all day and unable to sleep all night. I just went back to high levels of Prozac. Later, I went on Lexapro. If you are worried about another SSRI not being potent enough, maybe try augmentation with Wellbutrin?
