1/2 of .5mg? huh?

Recommended Posts

Started with a new pdoc after a few yrs unmedicated. In the past I was prescribed 1mg of klonopin as needed. I took it very rarely because for one I find the more I take it the less effective it is, and also for another thing I don't want to get dependent on it.

So he gave me a prescription and I didn't notice till I filled it to day that he prescribed 50, .5 mg pills. And the directions say take 1/2 a pill 3 times a day.

No as needed. And seriously, 1/2 of .5 ???? I take 1 mg when I'm extremely anxious and barely feel it. What the heck is 1/2 of .5 supposed to do? And am I supposed to take it every day whether I need it or not??

Maybe I should call him :/ I mean I understand that considering I rarely take it that I'll probably always have enough and definitely can make this last even taking 1 mg as needed which is what I plan to do lol, but it's confusing to me why the 3X daily and at such a ridiculously low dose.

I took .25mg of klonopin twice a day (as needed) and was fine with it.

I only took more klono then that if there's some serious bad shit going on in my head.

Your pdoc could have given you that for any number of reasons. Some pdocs don't like prescribing benzo's in the first place. It could be that he thinks that after being unmedicated for a few years that you'll be able to get relief now from a smaller dose then you were taking before. Or a bunch of other reasons that I can't think up right now because it's 9am.

If it doesn't say as needed, then yeah - he means for you to take the low dose three times a day. Klono's a long lasting benzo and you will end up taking .75 of it by the time the day's over. A constant low dose may keep you overall calmer every day.

It might just be me, but I think that you have a new pdoc and you should try taking the medication he prescribed you in the manner which he prescribed it. If you find that it's not working for you and you don't like it, report that back to him at your next visit and talk to him about it. If your next visit is a long time away at least try it for a few weeks, then give him a call.

I agree with May; take the med as its rxed and call pdoc if it isn't working. There are a number of reasons he could be rxing it in this way. One thing, like May said, is that taking it throughout the day may prevent you from getting overly tired. Another reason is to keep a supply of klono in you at all times.

The thing to remember is that you can always call him, even before your next appt, if it isn't working for you.

Hey,

Well, I've been on Klonopin before, and 0.25 mg is the amount that I was on. Actually, I was on that once a day, and it did help.

There is sometimes a difference between taking a benzo as needed and taking it regularly. A smaller amount regularly might be just as helpful as a larger amount when you need it.

I would definitely at least TRY taking it as your doctor prescribes. You can always change your mind later, but it's always worth trying what your doc recommends. If you're really unsure, call your doc and talk it over, but it's best not to do something your doc hasn't told you to do.

I agree with the other posters. A little throughout the day can be therapeutic for some of us. Me, I take 0.5mg ativan as needed. If you're worried about benzo poop-out, you can always switch to another one in the future, maybe.

I hope they give them to you in a 0.25 pill. If I had to cut my 0.5's in half, all I would wind up with is dust. heh heh

When I had .5mg klonoppin it was scored down the middle and snapped cleanly apart along that line.

But for pill cutting troubles, get a pill cutter! They sell them in the drugstores ;)

Right now I'm taking .25 mg of Klonopin in the morning and .25 mg at night. It really can help to take just that amount. I know people who take .25 mg as needed and it calms them down. It doesn't have to be a huge amount to work. Give it a chance. If it doesn't work for you, then talk to your pdoc.

I actually break my .5 mg clonazepams into QUARTERS and take them more often throughout the day...

I've told my doctor this and my reasoning for it, and he's all on board. I'm a former junkie and to keep me stable, rather than just medicated, I try and make sure that I don't feel my drugs "kick in" (unless it's during an emergency, like when I need my ativan or my seroquel). That way, I feel better without getting the instant gratification that screws with my brain. Taking it in the teeny tiny doses helps keep me relaxed as opposed to sedated... does that make sense?
