Racism-alive and well

Recommended Posts

That makes me sick to my stomach. I've heard many racist remarks that disgust me, but this tops them all. I don't understand how people think like this, I really don't.

That makes me sick to my stomach.

Me too.

I don't understand how people think like this, I really don't.

I don't either. It is absolutely beyond my ability to comprehend this kind of behavior. Why is it that some people just cannot accept something or someone different from themselves? There are many white people who add color to their skin with artificial light, but so many still hold prejudice to those with color inherent in their skin. I really don't get it. And far be it from me to understand why, in the minds of some, there needs to be a hierarchy of cultures. Sigh.

That is utterly disgusting! Next they'll be saying that black kids can't get on the buses for white kids!!! I thought they had at least got over SOME prejudice in the States. I know we have it here in England too, but those kids must have been really hurt by what happened.

Racism in any form is completely unacceptable! I really don't get the reasoning behind behaving in a prejudicial manner towards someone because of the colour of their skin, OR their religion or for any other reason. My head just doesn't get it! Among the friends I have and make, I don't chose friends just because they have white skin like myself. My friends are chosen on the basis of their personality and how we get along together.

I've also dated men and women of different races and religions and it has never been an issue (except to my parents who were not overtly racist but because they had never taken the time to get to know people other than white folks, they viewed people of different colours with fear). I'm guessing that a lot of racism is founded on fear and misunderstanding, although I may be completely wrong. Actually the same goes for the straight community with regards to anything that isn't heterosexual. That is all based on fear...

*Lexy shakes her head in disbelief*

/rant over!

This is not surprising for Philly. At all.

I know a lot of middle and upper class people on the Main Line (suburbs of Philly) and in that general area who moved out of Philly to get away from the "city people." Most residents of the city happen to be racial minorities and poor. This news story is just that covert racism and classism turning overt.

I'm familiar with the idea of "white flight," though locally, gentrification (more or less the opposite of "white flight") seems to be a bigger issue. And I realize that racism is alive and well in the North... I often ask myself about the reasons I think certain thoughts.

But these people didn't even give the poor black kids a chance to become disruptive or whatever. That's just... wow!

As Susan said, it is not shocking at all, but it is sick. People where I live are racist as hell, they have no problem harassing other races (but of course when the whites out number the minority) and it is pathetic. I hope that club faces a law suit, teach the fuckers a lesson. They act like the minority is the problem but it is the assholes who sit there and say these horrible things, they are the trash.

I don't know, Philadelphians can be brutal people. These are people from the same city that, during a football game at halftime during the holidays, pelted Santa with snowballs and booed him off the field. It was a long time ago, but that incident is sort of emblematic for how aggressive and ill-tempered Philadelphians can be. Not that I don't love Philly, I do, but tensions seem to sit right at the surface here.

Technically, though, these aren't Philadelphians, are they? They're suburbanites who only come to the city to work and/or shop. Or at least that's the impression I'm getting. Let me know if I'm mistaken.

I've never been to Philly, but it can't be that different from Boston*. Poor half-time Santa...

*I realize that Philly is bigger, but I think northeastern cities have a lot in common. ;)

I can't even imagine what it is like to be a kid and hear that. Nobody that age (well, nobody, period, really) should be able to or have to process that shit.

Re: Philadelphia. My aunt and uncle lived in the suburbs for a while (The Hague now), and when I visited them - let's just say as a person who does have some Aboriginal background, though I class myself white, and as someone who has studied Indigenous interactions with the larger society (from a political perspective, NOT an anthropologist!), I was shocked when I visited. The Philadelphia area has to be the only place in the world where 'colonial' is openly used in a positive fashion (only is an exaggeration, but go with me). What does that say about an area where they can't even put more thought into their own history?

There are towns like that in MA, but luckily, they are small (though sometimes oh-so-pretty and heritage-y) towns.

As for the club, I wouldn't be surprised if there was ground for a lawsuit. Sadly, there's no way of punishing the "concerned" patrons of said club, though.

I had no idea freepers were that racist. I've been to a protest where freepers showed up and yelled at us, though, and they were a bunch of old, rich-looking white people with lots and lots of flags. So I suppose I shouldn't be totally surprised.

Well, they have to find something wrong with that family. In a way, it's heartening that they have to stoop so low (although of course it's also scary on an immediate level).
