Need Sleep Med Opinions Fast

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the rush, but I have to make an emergency trip back home, and my sleep (sans xanax) is still in the crapper 6 weeks post giving up the xanax.

My doctor gave me a script for 30 mg of Remeron or 100 mg of Trazadone back in the beginning of June to try. I'm thinking it's time to try one, because I need to be as rested as possible while I'm there.

But here's the drawback: I can't be a friggin zombie while I'm there, because I'm going to be helping take care of a critically ill family member.

Can you pretty please share your experiences with the differences between these two drugs? My doc told me to try Remeron first, if that helps.

Or should I just fuck my xanax sobriety and take the xanax to sleep again?

Sorry for the urgency, I'm leaving Sunday morning.

Thanks a million!

Hey,

If it were me, I'd take the xanax, since you know it works.

I have no experience with traz, but I did take Remeron, and it did make me a zombie for the first few days.

The other thing about Remeron is that 30 mg (to the best of my knowledge) isn't a good sleep dose. People using it for sleep only tend to use 15 mg, or even 7.5 mg. 30 mg is an AD dose, and I don't know how you respond to ADs, but since you're BP, I'd be careful about monkeying around with that much Remeron, especially if you're going into a stressful situation.

It's up to you, but if it were me, I'd take the xanax. Remeron will probably have you hung over and incoherent for the first few weeks, and it sounds like you don't need that.

If you do take the remeron, I'd seriously consider taking a half or even a quarter of what you were prescribed. 30 mg is a lot for sleep.

But yeah, that shit can knock you flat. YMMV, but I was pretty fucked for a couple weeks when I started Remeron, and I imagine traz is the same, though I've never tried it myself.

I've done both at different times...

I found 25 mg of Remeron to be great as far a sleep-inducing medication. It mellowed me out to the point that I drifted off to sleep. Only reason I stopped was I hit a point I didn't need sleep drugs. That said, I did have a slight hangover effect for the first bit of it. It didn't leave me zombie-like, but I noticed that I had taken it.

I'm one of the few people who have had a really bad experience with Trazadone, so I'm not sure I should say much about it. I essentially woke up in a panic attack, and I don't know if that was a bad med reaction or if it would have happened anyway. It was enough that the people at the hospital said no more to that one pretty quickly. That said, I have a good friend on it and she said it was a pretty easy transition.

I'd go for low-dose remeron if you don't want the xanax. You won't have to worry about tolerence issues that way. Keep the xanax for emergencies when you really need it and don't waste it on sleep.

Try 15 mgs and see how it makes you feel. I was on 45 mgs and it actually wasn't that sedating at that high a dose.

Both remeron and traz will knock you out with their anti-histimine effect so there's not a ton of difference. I get a lot more side effects from Traz. (cottonmouth, difficulty peeing, etc).

Remeron might do some stuff other than slee, ie it might have an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect. Traz will just make you sleep.

I really like Remeron and would probably still be on it if it didn't make me gain weight.

Trazodone worked great for me, except for the prolonged night-time erections, which I gather is a relatively uncommon side-effect. I can recommend it as a short-term sleeping aid, particularly if you're female. If you're male and using it chronically, keep an eye on how your penis feels.

Did you try one out last night?

~ May

I got the script for Remeron last night, but because I had to be up bright and early at 7 am this morning, I didn't take it.

Because I'm massively stressed out over the events going on in my life, I went to bed late and woke up at 3:30 am. Ugh.

I'm going to use the Remeron tomorrow night. Cutting the dose in half to 15mg, thanks to the posts here.

Why not experiment and take it tonight so you'll know what to expect on the day you need it?
