Leafskipper
My pdoc precribed 300 mg in AM and 300 in PM. It's been 2 weeks. Almost right away I noticed being itchy without a rash. On Monday (7/7) my legs are a bit puffy, like they have extra water. Past Sunday (7/12) my foot heels became sore such that I'm tip-toeing around to avoid pain. On top of it all I'm very depressed and can't work. Anyone go through this with trileptal current or past? How did you deal? Are these side effects common? Damn, I was hoping that something would help me, I'm worried that yet another med is scratched off the list. Pls help. -ls
Silver
Itchy without rash is pretty common for a lot of AEDs, it seems. For me, itchy sans rash is part of summer's rich tapestry of allergies, too. Puffiness... when are you getting your sodium/lytes checked?
Leafskipper
I didn't know that about AEDs and the itch. My pdoc didn't know either apparently, said she'd not exp that w/ pts. Not sure about sodium, she hasn't mentioned that. I'll ask next week, thanks.
Silver
FWIW, neuro seemed to think it was relatively common, and something they weren't worried about, as long as liver functions were all OK (and since they're being monitored anyway, easy to tell.) Lamictal seems to be one of the more common offenders for itching / pruritis that occurs without rash. As to low sodium (hyponatremia), it's about a 2-3% incidence with Trileptal, so, yes, it's worth monitoring in the first few months.
Leafskipper
Has anyone experienced depression or increased suicidal thoughts while on trileptal? I've read about it and believe it's making my symptoms worse. I don't have a history of suicidal ideations etc. :/

I've read about it and believe it's making my symptoms worse. I don't have a history of suicidal ideations etc. :/ Actually, I'm on 1800mg (1.5 600mg BID) and for the first time I've had bad suicidal thoughts to the point I had to call friends for intervention. I'm taking myself down on my dosage and seeing what happens. Discussing this with my pdoc to see what can be done. In general I'm not seeing much in the way of stabilization with Trileptal. Or at least not as much as I did with Depakote. I may be switching back to Depakote since it did seem to work though it made me gain some weight. My moods actually seem to be more pronounced than they were before. I seem more hypomanic all too often and now I'm experiencing periods of low depression. I have an appointment tomorrow so I hope something positive comes of it. Until then, I'm hanging in there. Good luck and keep us posted.
