Risperdal, Celexa, Depakote: The sedation effect?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, long time lurker first time poster. Enjoy the boards here.

Anyway, down to business: I take Risperdal twice daily, Celexa twice daily, and Depakote once daily at bedtime. Around an hour or so after taking the Risperdal and Celexa, I get extremely drowsy, to the point that if I were lying down, I'd be out like a light. Clearly this is not a good thing to have, especially at work. I've been on these drugs for about 3 weeks now, and I'm wondering when the sedating effect will wear off. If anyone knows, that would be helpful, as Google is not exactly answering my question. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: If this is in the wrong forum, could a moderator please move it to the right one?

Hi, and welcome to Crazyboards (CB)! I've taken both Risperdal and Cipralex, which is close to Celexa. But as usual I don't remember how I reacted, and even if I did it probably would not have a bearing on your situation. You could of course mention which doses and official diagnosis you got, but I doubt that anyone will be able to answer your question. Did a search on the internet, and the table attached was what I found. It's from Sleep in schizophrenia patients and the effects of antipsychotic drugs, Sleep Medicine Reviews (2004) 8,133-148. Hope the sedative effects will wear off soon.

Ah, well, my dosages are at 1mg of Risperdal twice daily, 20mg of Celexa twice daily, and 500mg of Depakote, once daily. My doctor hasn't given me an official diagnosis, but he did say it's "tentatively" Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar type.

My guess is that its the risperdal. I used to take it twice a day (1mg and 1 mg) and i couldnt take it. Couldnt keep my head up. Then we switched it all to nighttime and the tiredness went into my dreams ;) I have since lowered my dosage because of the weight gain factor but that's off subject. Stick through the tiredness, it goes away and it is well worth it, IMO.

Talk to your pdoc about that.

Risperdal, Celexa, and Depakote can all cause fatigue, drowsiness, and sleepiness. When several meds are taken at once, it's generally difficult or impossible to work out precisely which one is causing which effect. The only thing to do is wait for it to pass, or adjust doses and times to see whether it makes a difference. As mika said, and if your psychiatrist agrees, taking the Risperdal as a single dose at night might be a good start.
