witchywoman
My pdoc raised my lithium about a week ago, from 600 mg to 900 mg. Yesterday I went to an amusement park. It was hot and I was walking alot. I tried to keep myself hydrated but probably not very well. By the end of the evening, I had such a bad headache. Now today Im having muscle twitches/jerking (this has actually started since the increase, but it is worse today), feeling weak, and an on and off headache. I just really feel awful. I just had my lithium level done Saturday so I doubt it's back yet. It usually takes a few days to get blood work back. What are your thoughts? I've looked up the symptoms and I do have some of them but not all of them. Just wanted to get your thoughts and maybe you can tell me what to do. My pdoc is on vacation, so I can't just call him. helenllama
If you think it is toxicity go to the ER
AirMarshall
Could be. Sounds fairly typical for me when I over do it in the heat. Have you tried drink some Gatorade which has a good amount of electolytes? You might also try having a salty snack and several glasses of water. I find those two methods help me to keep going when I'm outside in the heat. To prevent this I basically have to be more cautious in the heat and not push myself too hard. If you start vomiting, having severe muscle spasms or changes in cognition go to the ER. a.m.
sorrel
When I spend too much time in the heat, I get a severe headache with vomiting. It's obviously lithium-related, but Gatorade, water and Excedrin usually fix it for me.
witchywoman
I called my pdocs secretary and found out that my lithium level is the same, 0.5, as it was at 600 mg. So I doubt it's lithium toxicity. Besides, I've drank plenty of water and gatorade and still not feeling good. I think Im just sick with something, cant figure out what. Anyway, thanks for all your input.
crazynotstupid
Could've largely been symptoms of plain ol' heatstroke (or the onset of) as well. Personally I prefer powerade to gatorade, it just feels "thicker" and richer--and when I'm busting my butt in the sun I'm never without it. I may not be on lithium any more but by God I'm not gonna sweat out all my water and minerals and drop unconscious where no one's gonna find me for days!
