Over or under medicated

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering what your tendency is, do you prefer to be a little under or over mediated. It's so hard to be just right, think about it. My symptoms can change almost daily, but more or less the amount of medication I take to deal with slightly changing symptoms remains the same. If the meds are there to deal with the symptoms, not the root causes, and the symptoms vary, that means you are going to tend to be over or under medicated.

I used to be over medicated because I just didn't want to run the risk of things getting out of control. But now that I've ventured back into society, I find that being over medicated can cut into my interactions with others and my performance, so I've gone to having just enough meds in me to cover. What's your preference?

Just wondering.

I agree with you. Being off of workfor a year, I didn't mind over-med. Now that I am starting school and interacting with people I have cut off meds. But being under-medicated isn't working for my mental health. It's a catch 22 because being under-medicated makes you more "there" cognitively and more of a personality but on the other hand you are sacrificing your mental health. I am hoping for perfection when it comes to my meds being regulated before school.

Well, it probably depends on what problem(s) you're medicating. If it's seizures, then I think I'd rather be overmedicated--assuming I couldn't be medicated just right... For some of the other problems, I think it'd depend on my coping abilities and my abilities to tell when a bad episode (of whatever) is approaching.

Really, though, I'd rather be medicated just right. ;)

I didn't think about what symptom you are medicating. But the just right dosage and different pills, the combinations and permeations are almost incalculable, I've begun to doubt it. The meds treat the symptoms, as the symptoms change and the way you treat them (with meds) does not change. Seems to me sometimes like a car with only one gear.

I tend to be on high side of hypo-mania (I'll medicate full blown mania back to the stone age) with some psychotic symptoms thrown in. I've just gotten to the point where I'd rather mid level cope with the problems than have them smothered out;

I was being over medicated and didn't realize until I had to stop the med due to an intolerable side effect. Now I know I was being over medicated as I feel and function much better. But I wouldn't have known. My Pdoc says this is the least amount of meds I have been on in awhile. Did I need it at the time? I thought so.

We'll see if my symptoms come back which for me are more depression than mania. I hope not as I will be starting school next month and need my wits about me. But having been at both poles, I'm fortunate that I am stable being under medicated now.
