I'm on Seroquel and I heard that antipsychotics can make heat related symptoms worse. I've always had bad reactions to heat, but I guess I've been on antipsychotics for some time too..basically the heat here is really unusual for this area so my office isn't equipped to handle and I only have normal fans here. I've been covering myself up with wet towels and hitting myself straight on with the fan but I still feel nauseated, headachey, and very emotional and weepy. I had to take today off of work with the lame sounding excuse "The heat is making me sick" which is making me feel even more stressed out because it sounds so bogus...but it's very legitimate given my history, illness (depression) and the fact that i'm on antipsychotics.

I called my doctor but I don't know what I can do. I'm panicking about even going outside and I'm afraid even if I do something like get to work really early in the morning, it's almost 90 in the office and I'm afraid I'll start panicking and crying...

Does anyone have any advise about dealing with the heat? If needed I suppose I can get a letter from my doctor but even being at home is totally killing me. Minor minor stuff is throwing me out of whack and I'm crying and freaking out.

Drink water and gatorade.

EAT! Food is a BIG part of hydration.

Don't use antiperspirant, deoderant only. You need to perspire to stay cool.

Moniter the color of your urine.

Clear = over hydrated.

Dark yellow or strong smelling = dehydrated

When in doubt, check your capillary refill by pressing down on your fingernail and seeing how long it takes to turn from white back to pink.

I worked a job outside during the day in summer-when the usual outdoor temp is 95. I'd take a few days off-but if you have to go in, chew ice constantly. This will help keep your body temp down. Also put the ice on the pulse points of you neck and in your armpits. A wetted and frozen sport bra is a wonderful thing.
