ssri's causing wierd "visuals"

Recommended Posts

When I started taking Prozac, I started seeing things, like ceilings, "breathe", that is, I saw/see things look like they move a little, sort of, as if they were breathing rhythmically. The effect was certainly less crippling than severe depression, so I didn't really say anything to my psychiatrist back then. It kind of livened up high school, really.

This effect doesn't really affect me much, as a practical matter. I can see quite well, although it did make my last eye exam a bit more challenging-the letters kept moving just a little. The only time I find it particularly annoying, even, is if I walk on a tiled floor with a high level of contrast between tiles, which I find really obnoxious. Floors like that sort of jump at me and pulse, leaving afterimages, and I have to force myself to look away.

I can't really say whether it's gotten worse lately or not, but I am noticing it more these days.

Just one of those things, I suppose.

I get some weird visual happenings too - and I'm not on Prozac. I'm on Seroquel, Topamax, and Welbutrin. I think my weirdness started right after the Topamax, but it's been a while so I don't remember. It could have been the Seroquel. Anyway, I have trouble walking on patterned walkways too, not because things "breath" but because patterns tend to jump around. I have to look straight ahead and make an effort to not look down.

When I get tired, I get vision trails behind everything that moves - not just bright things, everything. It's kinda trippy but when I'm *really* tired I think it's pretty neat. It does make driving interesting though, so I try not to drive tired especially at night.

I had my eyes checked when the weirdness began, and again about a year later, and the optometrists said that my eyes were okay. I can only surmise that the weirdness is an affect of the meds. As long as it's not affecting me too badly, I'm not gonna worry about it.

I've been on Paxil and Zoloft and they both made me see things. . . differently. Like Lights were brighter, things looked sharper, it was odd. Probably the only mild thing the SSRI's did to me, I don't take them anymore. Effexor has too, but to a lesser degree, and I swear my pupils are always dialated.

What you are describing sounds a little more severe. I think it's definitely something to bring up with your p-doc.
