netsavy006
Here it comes again. It seems to be no matter what AP I take I get this darn side effect. Now I'm stuck as to finding what medication I can find that will help treat this side effect. What are some (prescription) options I can ask my pdoc about since I already know from past experience with other meds that Cogentin and Artane don't work for me. Glad to have my 3x/day Valium to be of some assistance in the meantime but I know it won't be enough in the long run. Thanks, Andy...
Swamp56
When you say "AP", are you talking about all types of antipsychotics, or atypical antipsychotics (which are prescribed most of the time)?
netsavy006
I mean every AP I've taken both atypical and not.
Renegade
Zyprexa gave me the worst akathisia--I sympathize. If it doesn't put you into the ozone, have you tried clonazepam?
remedy48
If my pdoc increases the dose of my seroquel to fast I'll get akathesia. Its annoying. Clonazepam is good for akathesia. Also increase your dose of your antipsychotic slowly.
recoverymouse
there's a med that can help alleviate this, I forget the name but it was formulated to help symptoms of parkinsons.
beetle
Here's some info from Wiki Acute akathisia is treated with medications, most often diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Treatment can also include the discontinuation or reduction of dose of the causative agent. Akathisia can also be reduced by administering other drugs, though effectiveness can vary with more severe cases resistant to most drug treatment. Benzodiazepines like clonazepam (Klonopin) are effective. Some consider the drug of choice for the treatment of akathisia to be beta-blockers such as propranolol (Inderal) or metoprolol. The antihistamine cyproheptadine is also effective, though with shorter effect than beta blockers. One study showed that vitamin B6 is effective for the treatment of neuroleptic-induced akathisia.[11] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akathisia#Treatment
recoverymouse
sorry, the parkinsons drug is mentioned in the original post-- cogentin.
netsavy006
Even though I've tried all the atypical antipsychotics (Including Clozaril but that caused other problems) + Thorazine, it it possible for a different antipsychotic to not induce restlessness/akathisia? SashaSue
Anything is possible, though it seems unlikely at this point.
gizmo
I think the general rule is "akathesia once, akathesia always." The chemical and neural reactions that occur in your brain that I can't explain (and you can) don't change just because a few months have passed. But hell, I'm the one who let four different pdocs put me on abilify even though I got akathesia on it each and *every* time. I got smart, though. I didn't let pdoc #5 put me on it, pdoc #6 never had a chance to (he quit the practice a month into it), and I am not letting future pdoc #7.
