Popping Pain Pills

Recommended Posts

Interesting article in the Times today about how pharmaceutical companies are trying to make pain pills more tamper-resistant. The statistics on how much they are abused are pretty startling.

I tell you, this is one of my biggest fears of my son becoming a teenager. I have so many pills in my kitchen cabinet (mental and pain) that the teen phenomenon of pill stealing and swapping would be devastating for us.

My son's 12, and we've had talks with him already about how he can't consume alcohol at parties (he's had stomach surgery that makes it next to impossible for him to throw up). We've also talked about "mom's special pills" and how they are very dangerous for anyone besides mom to take.

And even though all my mental meds are stowed away and I only have a weekly pill holder out, I have pain meds for my head and my knee, anti-nausea meds, stomach meds, son's ADHD med (scary in and of itself if in another child's hands), etc.

How easy it would be for a friend of my son's to convince him to swipe a few Adderall, a few xanax, a few darvocet, or worse, some zyprexa.

So I will keep educating my son, and hope he listens to what I say. And count my meds like a hawk when he starts getting a little older.

Were it me, that med cabinet would be a locked steel cabinet. You could get a one-drawer lockable file cabinet-that'd likely be the cheapest option. Make sure it stays locked.

If he has to use a crowbar to get to the drugs, then it'll be as obvious as a heart attack if any get taken.

I'm just concerned that all of this shit is going to make it harder for my pain to be treated. That would suck and I would be, like, a non-functional human being.

Some people in my office mentioned drugs like Vicodin and called then "druggie drugs." Well, I call it a life saver. Yes, it is abused by a lot of people, but I *need* it to function. The pain is excruciating without it.

Sorry, I am sort of branching off into a personal issue.

I'm with you Ophelia, I am afraid they will make it harder for Chronic Pain patients like us to get our meds. I take Hydrocodone too and without it I can't raise my arms up to shoulder level without excruciating pain. Forget lifting my chair and putting it in the car on my own, or getting in and out of the tub, I hate the ignorance of people thinking that it's just to get high, it's just to FUNCTION for crying out loud. Now I have all my meds and the two pill organizers in a padlocked tackle box I bought at walmart for $5. Already had the padlock and I have the keys around my neck, so I don't have that worry anymore. I am really worried about what the future holds for us after things like Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith and other's OD'ing. *sigh* just not fair to those of us who take pain meds AS prescribed....

The locked filing cabinet is good idea, however I would use a fire proof lock box, the ones u buy to keep important papers etc in. They are like little safes. True, anyone could just steel it, but those filing cabinets are easy to get in to. If you set up your meds a week at a time, it may be a week before you know that your son has stolen pills. Not sure what you have told him about mom's "special pills", but HE IS TWELVE YEARS OLD!!!! He's probably a little more savvy that you want to believe, unless he is developmentally delayed or has other issues that would delay his natural curiosities and growth.

If mommy had special pills that make her happy and feel better and keeps her in a good mood I, as a 12 yr old, would find that VERY INTERESTING!

Take your special pills weekly setup containers & the RX bottles & keep them locked up separately! Your son may not have an interest, but his friends might!!!

BTW: Get all of the meds, including OTC out of the kitchen!!! If you have a bathroom closet, install a key lock doorknob.

If you would not leave a gun and ammo casually around the house then don't leave meds that way.

I'm 45+, and have worked in the adolescent psych field for 24 years, now retired from the field. I have Mayor Depression, Profound Anxiety and Chronic Pain. I'm disclosing this to qualify my response. PLEASE take my advice, this is a serious matter.

***** Oh, I failed to mention that I WAS a 12 yr old girl who stole my mothers happy pills (valium) and pain pills (Vicodin, after a surgery) No transference issue in this advice. Bottom line is your child is a part of our future and his growth needs to be nurtured and guided*****
