tryp
Low dose TCA, like amitriptyline or dothiepin? Risperdal? More Seroquel? Ativan? Sometimes a shorter acting benzo is better for sleep. One of the typical antipsychotics?
gizmo
Higher dosage of one of your benzos. Seriously. I take 1mg (well, did at the time) of xanax when a panic attack strikes, but 2mg calmed the thoughts in my head enough for me to sleep. 3mg would knock me right out. I took 2mg for about 6 months, then quit because I was concerned about tolerance/addiction/other stuff in my brain not pertaining to your situation. It was the best 6 months of sleep I've had in 20 years. Seriously. I'm not recommending it to everyone, but, like you, I tried everything including TCAs and other old ADs with sleepy properties to no avail. And the AAPs knocked me out, just not until the next day. Friggin weird, if you ask me. Good luck. I know what you are going through.
Ophelia
And none of them work, at all. What's next? tried klonopin, ambien, seroquel Some other meds that people have used other than the ones you mentioned: Eszopiclone (Lunesta) Temazepam (Restoril) Zalepon (Sonata) Ramelteon (Rozerem) Trazodone (Desyrel) Maybe you can try one of them? papertrees
hmm.. ill ask my psychiatrist about trozadone.. i just dont know if it's available here.. I'll go and ask him about other methods for sleep, i just feel like i ran out of options. I took 200mg of seroquel to no avail. Xanax, I can't touch with a ten-foot pole because i have addiction issues.
MarkP
Ativan (lorazepam) didn't touch my insomnia (really..the only thing wrong with me...which devolves into a horrible depression, anxiety, and a light psychosis if I don't sleep for 4 or 5 days in a row!), even in high doses. But a low dose of temazepam was like, 'boom'.. It just worked.. Seroquel, in high doses (ie: 200mg), may actually be stimulating, because of its action on serotonin receptors. There is also Halcion (triazolam) -- but if you have issues with Xanax, then theoretically, you have issues with all other GABA agonists/enhancers, so you're really limited in what pharmacotherapy can accomplish. scatty
One word-amitriptyline.

That's a big "may" though. Lots of people get sleep benefit from high doses
mudpuppy
Trazodone works well for me, when taken infrequently. [i tend to build tolerance to meds rather quickly. YMMV] Seroquel at higher doses relaxes me enough to sleep, if I'm so inclined. Most of my sleep issues revolve around anxiety/fear, so it's not so much that I need a sedative as it is I need to relax. Compazine, a typical antipsychotic, really knocks me out. papertrees
thanks. I will talk to my pdoc about all of this. I really can't sleep. I'm currently confined, so the nurse gives me ambien when I can't sleep, but it doesn't work anymore.
december_brigette
i just have to... markp wrote: Seroquel, in high doses (ie: 200mg), may actually be stimulating, i was on 1000 yes 1000mg of seroquel and got the best sleep of my whole life ever. due to other issues im off it. trazodone puts me into the next day fairly well. meaning i get good sleep when i take it. my pnp wrote it prn so i can decide when i want to take it. db
MiaB
i was on 1000 yes 1000mg of seroquel and got the best sleep of my whole life ever. ditto, except I am still on that dose. Anything under 1,000 does nothing for me.
papertrees
1,000 mg? A patient here is on 1,500mg of Seroquel. Heh. Just thought I'd share.
kdbee
(grr, i hate it when messages get erased) Temazepam helps me to a decent degree. It helps putting my BODY asleep when i get into bed (and stops the RLS to a large degree as well as a blinking OCD thing i do when i get into bed). It does take much much longer for my brain to shut the f*ck up. What it really helps me with is STAYING asleep. I took 30mg last night and am prettysure that i didn't wake up one time. Which is pretty miraculous. If it actually helped me go to sleep I'd love it to death. Anyhow, it's worth a shot. EDITED TO ADD: I'm really pissed at Restoril. Yeah, it keeps me asleep but...my god...it still shouldn't take me three hours to fall asleep. I think it's becoming less effective and I've only used it probably five times (over 2 weeks)
