Geodon dosage reduced, severe withdrawel symptoms.

Recommended Posts

I know I just joined, but I can't find very much on this odd situation I am in. I am now on 40mg Geodon. I was previously on 60 and at the highest, 180. I have been diagnosed with many, many different illnesses, though I do not believe I have all of them. They are - Schizo affective, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, OCD, Depression, Psychotic Depression, Mood Disorder, Dissociative Personality Disoder, and Premenstrual Disphoria. I am 16 years old and a junior in an alternative school. I am on Geodon, Klonopin, and birth control. Previous medications are Lexapro, Seroquel, Abilify, Propanalol, Artane, Invega, Cogentin, and Lithium.

My medication was reduced on Tuesday. The next day, I came into school late because I was tired. I was up until midnight and wide awake. I fell asleep and I was supposed to get up at 6 am. I was too tired and slept until 7:30. I have to be at a school an hour away at 8:30 so this wasn't good.

Yesterday, I felt so tired that I couldn't go into school. I stayed home and woke up at 9:30. I felt better... then stayed up late again against my will and came into school late again. But at school, I had some very bizzare symptoms.

I am usually calm but I could not stop talking starting 2nd period. I was talking, talking talking. Somebody yelled shut up! 3rd period I got my work done, but I was looking up stuff that I should never look up in school just for the hell of it, something I would never do in the right state of mind. Things get crazy 4th period. I talk nonstop until the point where my teacher said she was leaving the class. I chased her out of the classroom yelling "Come back!". I then started walking around the classroom in circles. Very little work done. 5th period (lunch) I go off campus with some people. I get rediculously silly, shouting profanity at the people passing by. 6th-7th period (same class) I feel pretty mellow and okay. 8th period, last class, I feel sad like I am being ignored. I felt like crap on the bus ride home. I got home and took a Klonopin.

So I have had the following side affects - insomnia followed by overtiredness, a very, very high followed by a crash. Are there typical symptoms of Geodon doasage reduction? Oh, and I've been on Geodon since Mach 2008.

I have read plenty about geodon withdrawal. It does happen for some people. So that might be part of your problem. But I also wonder if you're not having a bit of mania because you're no longer on a theraputic dose of geodon. I'm no expert, just speculating. Maybe the geodon was keeping some of your mood problems in check and now that you've reduced your dose, those problems are coming back.

Has your doctor said anything about putting you on a different med once you're off the geodon?

Doctor said nothing about putting me on any other medications. Geodon was the only one that did anything for me. Lexapro made me go nuts, Artane made me have hardcore hallucinations, Seroquel made me faint, Lithium made me pee my pants, Abilify made me shake uncontrolably + Panic attacks, Invega made me go nuts AND gain weight. I have had highs and lows, but the high I had today was more powerful than any I have had in a long time. What is considered the therapeutic dose?

Gee, you lower a mood stabilizer and get a bit manic. No surprise there.

Let your teacher know you are going thru a med change and apologize for any disruption you might have caused. If things don't stabilize give your pdoc a call. You may need to go back up to a slightly higher dosage and use a slower taper. (got a pill splitter?)

Hope you feel better. a.m.

Thank you. My dad wants me to wait a few days to see if this wears off... also I can't really use a pill splitter on Geodon as it is a capsule. I'll give it until Monday or so to see if things have stabilized.

I guess the question is then... why were you put on geodon in the first place and why aren't you being put on something else in it's place?

I guess it can vary from person to person but I thought the target dose for geodon is 160mg, usually split between AM and PM. But some people take different dosages.

It really sounds like to me that the geodon was keeping a lid on your mood problems and now going off of it, those problems are returning. You might level out after you get off geodon completely but something tells me that you probably need something in place of the geodon.

I was put on Geodon because Invega was a nightmare for me. I was put on it when I was hospitalized for the second time. I was either going to be put on Seroquel again or Geodon. Seroquel made me pass out the day I was prescribed it and I didn't want to gop through that again so I was put on Geodon. I stayed on 160 for a few months but got tired and got akathesia (not as bad as Abilify though)

OK, so you're going off of it completely or just planning to stay at 40mg? It sounds like you need a drug to replace it if you're going off of it. But I'm not your doctor so it's not my call, obviously. If you felt better at 160mg but got akathesia there are other drugs they can add to try to counter that. I think you mentioned Artane and that it didn't work for you. I forget what the other drug is. Hopefully, someone will respond with the answer.
