Does Concerta really last, for me the answer is NO NO NO NO

Recommended Posts

I have tried focalin xr (wore off way to fast but loved the way it worked when it did) ritalin (made me want to rip off the face of the person next to me). Now im on concerta. My pdoc says take 36 mg per day. This crap wears off before lunch. i took it at 7:00 and at 11:30 im daydreaming and spaced OUT. So i popped another 18 mg after lunch and seem to be doing better. I could probably do 36mg in the am and at lunch. Anyone else have to take their concerta more than once a day???

Adult dosing is recommended as high as 72mg daily.

Looking at the blood level/delivery curves for Concerta, it rapidly rises during the first 1.5 hours and goes up again another 50% to peak at about 5 hours. Blood levels drop to half of peak around 12-13 hours.

I don't see any reason why the drug cannot be taken more than once daily. Of course the advantage of Concerta is to avoid having to do that. My gut feel is that it sounds like your brain is just burning up all that concerta. (That's a technical term) A dosage increase may do better than multiple dosing. ;)

Talk to your pdoc about what you are experience and what you have tried.

Good luck! a.m.

I was taking 52mgs twice a day and my pdoc is an ADHD expert. It was once ever 6-7 hours. I had a schedule of school plus work that had me starting class at 9AM and driving an hour back home on the freeway at 11pm so anything less than 14 hours med coverage was unacceptable.

Talk to your doc and explain your needs. If they aren't welling to meet them, get a new doc.

Thank you so much. I took 36 mg yesterday morning and 18 mg at noon. AT 5:00 when i got off work i was dead tired with a dreaded case of the YAWNS!

I am going to talk to him about taking 36 or 54 in the am and 36 more in the pm...the 18mg yesterday at noon didnt do anything...so i googled things all day and found this message board LOL and go NO work done...and almost had a wreck on the way home...being ADD and being distracted by stupid things like...oh dogs in peoples yards or doors open in houses and you try and look in...OH CHEESE AND RICE i digress.

I am gonna see if my pdoc will let me play with my meds and find one right for me. Thanks you guys!!!!

You definitely have room to go up with that.

If you feel it's helping, just not enough, see if the dose can be raised and if it's not long enough, then yeah you can take it twice a day or maybe with something else.

I take concerta in the morning and then in the afternoon I take ritalin, which seems to be an improvement over just taking the concerta in the am.

I [heart] concerta. ;)

Alright so I was taking 36 mg of Concerta at 7:00 am...feeling no relief of symptoms and getting so tired that i could nap on my desk at 11:30 am...i had convinced myself it would be okay to take an 18mg at lunch to get thru the rest of the day....that was a mistake for ME. Because it made my sypmtoms WORSE...i was staring at clouds all day...from my office window. So this morning i thought MAYBE i should try 54mg and see...i popped 3 18mgs and its 2:00pm and im still good to go...NO daydreaming...it doesnt control ALL my symptoms like the constant foot tapping, or obsessively checking my cell phone for texts/emails....(that could just be cause im a girl) LOL....but my focus and comprehension are up...I didnt notice however that i get aggitated a little easier about things...but im able to not lash out...does anyone else experience this?

There's a term for this: "chasing the dragon" (from the speed/crystal meth community, no less.) The short version is that taking an additional amount of a stimulant while the previous dose is active tends to do fuck-all for why you're taking it.

It's also a "Ritalin Kids" symptom - an ADDer taking too much of a stimulant can zone completely out "I spent the afternoon counting holes in the ceiling tiles" as one friend put it.

I didnt notice however that i get aggitated a little easier about things...but im able to not lash out...does anyone else experience this?

IIRC, noradrenaline (Its release is stimulated by most ADHD meds) is associated with aggressive behavior. But one thing I like about my SNRI is that it's a LOT easier to let petty annoyances - like being cut off in traffic - slide without the temptation to retaliate. The offending driver is still an ass, but I can let him/her go be an ass to someone else. Preferably an unmarked patrol car.
