Say, if a person who isn't depressed takes an SSRI, can serotonin syndrome be a consequence?

Sometimes.. I don't know whether I'm okay, or not. ;) I know it's silly, and; yeah, but I don't have any professional status so. I'm stupid, obviously.

Shoooooot.

I'm not a pharmacist, a doctor, or a nurse--or anything, but I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that the only way to get serotonin syndrome is if you're taking more than one drug that makes serotonin stick around longer in your neural synapses*. That goes even for people who for some reason take an SSRI/SNRI without ever having had decreased synaptic levels of serotonin.

*Some OTC chemicals (e.g., dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant) can mess with serotonin levels.

Edited and re-edited for clarity.

No, not unless they overdose. It doesn't matter if they are depressed or not.

Remember, there is no real evidence that depression causes reduced serotonin levels. It's just a theory and one that isn't very well-supported, and is disbelieved by many in the field.

Are you getting side effects? That's the best explanation if physical things have changed a bit.

Pretty much everything you right sounds like you have the symptoms of depression, but you could always ask your doctor and they might be able to clarify some stuff for you.

Hang in there.

Just because you do not know the answer yet doesn't mean you are stupid.

Thanks everyone for replying.

I'm not sure if people think low serotonin levels CAUSE depression, but a lot of people's depression improve with the treatment of SSRI's. Also, SSRI's don't just raise serotonin levels; they prevent the old neurotransmitters from being taken back to the synapse for later use. Or something like that. I understand it in a vague way, but not really enough, y'know?

Whatever. Sometimes I do wonder if, yes, indeed I do have low serotonin levels as a result of a situational depression which after a while turned into a biological one. If you understand what I'm saying.

I was always crap at chemistry.
