sedating antihistamines and TCAs

Recommended Posts

Nasty hayfever. I took loratadine, telfast and pseudoephedrine (just one) over about two hours and it's not doing anything. I'm also chewing vitamin C like lollies just in case it can maybe help.

Still itchy, tired, headache from my sinuses being blocked, asthma and coughing.

I have some allergy eye drops but it contains a decongestant and my eyes are pretty dry already. I have some phenergan on hand but I'm not sure exactly what the combined anticholinergic side effects entail. Dry mouth? sedation? anything that could be dangerous?

When I'm in doubt, I use this handy dandy medication interaction checker!

Of course you might just mean what combined side effects would entail, and not exactly what combined interactions there would be, and so I could have completely missed the mark of this post.

Careful not to take too much Vitamin C. Too much is actually bad for you ;)

Not quite so bad when #2 won't go through.

On topic, the more sedating TCAs get that way by being strong antihistamines, some of which make Benadryl look like a sugar pill. Too much anticholinergic effect can be very dangerous.

A common mnemonic used to describe the physiologic manifestations of atropine overdose is: "hot as a hare, blind as a bat, dry as a bone, red as a beet, and mad as a hatter".

Phenegran is sedating and not helpful at all for my allergies. Works really well for nausea though. ;)

I can't tell if you're looking for something that is or isn't sedating, but for non-sedating, Allegra works best for me. I don't know if you can get it OTC; mine's a script. Claritin is supposed to be non-sedating, but it makes me loopy as hell. Pseudoephedrine will keep me up all night, even if i take it early in the day.
