Moody
I stopped taking Abilify about a month ago, because I kept having anxiety/jitters even when my pdoc changed the dose. It turned out that the Abilify was really helping to control my moods, because once I went off it, I had depression and bad anxiety. My doctor said I could try a low dose of Risperdal to see if I liked it, so I started it about 5 days ago. It got rid of most of my anxiety almost immediately, but I am still feeling kind of flat and low. I also feel sleepy and spacey, but that might go away after I have been on it longer. Does Risperdal help with depression like Abilify does? I felt great after taking Abilify for only 3 days. Actually, I may have felt a little TOO great for the first month I was on it, I think it may have given me hypomania for the first time in my life. Normally I only have depression and mixed states. Abilify had me doing strange things like belting out show tunes at 8AM while getting ready for work. Very bizarre behavior for me.
DogMan
it does take the teensiest edge off, but it's a mostly negligible effect. mostly it helps to augment an AD or similar
SashaSue
Invega, which is pretty much the same thing as Risperdal, definitely helped with my last depression. I did have to go up to a pretty high dose though.
mika
I agree with Tom. If I go off it even for a day, I can't stop thinking about killing myself. Therefore, I can't live without Risperdal now. Works very well as an AD, and a few other uses too.
Swamp56
Atypical antipsychotics can be used for such issues as major depressive disorder as well as anxiety, and of course, for psychotic disorders and mood disorders. So yes, Risperidone might help. The effects are subjective, meaning that everyone has a different reaction to the medication.
Velvet Elvis
My dx is recurrent depression and it helps quite a bit, combined with two other anti-depressants.
Moody
Thanks everyone! How long did it take to work for you? I have been on it 4 days and dont notice much of a difference yet, but I am on the lowest dose. I am also on an antidepressant (Remeron) so hopefully this will work. Guest
Risperidone is a mood stabiliser, so it may help.
SashaSue
Once I got up to the right dosage, it kicked in pretty quickly, within a day or two, I think.
briefcrossing
From my experience it will help with anxiety and obsessional thoughts. I'm on a low dose: 2 mg. I heard from a MD that it is good for suicidal thoughts as well, so I'm sure it will help with depression.
