Does anyone get GOOD side effects from meds?

Recommended Posts

There is always so much discussion of bad side effects here, I thought it might be interesting to see if people also get good side effects from their meds. I am one of those people who always wants to go off meds because of side effects, so I try to remember that I get good ones too.

I will just list a few recent meds:

Abilify - I am not taking it currently, but when I was taking it, it was GREAT for migraines. I went from having 1-2 migraines a week to 1 every 2-3 months.

Remeron - I love the way Remeron makes me sleep. I fall asleep right after I take it, and I dont have horrible nightmares anymore. Remeron also seems to make my allergy symptoms better.

I am also taking Risperdal, but I havent noticed any side effects yet, bad or good.

Anyone else?

I take topamax SPECIFICALLY for the purpose of migraine prevention. It is a lifesaver for me.

Zyprexa took away 75% of my anxiety, besides being a killer mood stabilizer for me. I wasn't expecting the anxiety part, but my decreased xanax intake sure appreciates it.

I agree with the Remeron thing, same with my klonopin, it helps me sleep. Actually, I've only had good effects from the klonopin, besides the daytime sedation

Effexor killed my appetite and I lost ten pounds, but I'm off that med now and slowly gaining it back.

While I was on BuSpar, I didn't have as many creepy, gory, vivid nightmares.

Oh yeah, and there's always that REALLY good side effect- WHEN THEY WORK. Haven't had much luck with that one yet, 'cept the klono.

Cymbalta took away a lot of my aches and pains. I didn't realize how many until I stopped taking it.

Ya know, when I was really depressed and unmedicated my back hurt all the time. I would constantly get like that pinched nerve pain in various places. Even went to a chiropractor for a nagging one in my lower back.

But since being medicated again, I don't have those problems nearly as often. I still get a crick in my neck sometimes or if I sleep wrong or something but there's a lot less physical pain overall.

Provigil made me nice and relaxed, spaced out in a good, peaceful way. It was the best tranquilizer I ever had. Ironically, I was taking it to keep me from falling asleep all the time during the day.

One of my AD's had a great antihistamine effect, but can't remember which one now.

Oh, and the first time I ever took Ambien, I had the greatest visual trips. I was "sane" and knew that what I was seeing wasn't true, so it was really fun just to sit back and enjoy the ride. The news anchor on TV sprouted two heads, and the braided rug in the livingroom morphed into a 3-D pit about 12 feet deep. I could turn the lightbulbs in the room into gigantic comets streaking through the sky simply by turning my head.

It was fun while it lasted. Unfortunately, I habituated to Ambien so quickly that by the third night, I could have safely operated heavy machinery. So much for getting to sleep.

Aside from making me less crazy... ;) One of the meds (or is it the combo? I dunno) gives me trippy sight effects when I'm tired. I get neato vision trails like one hand with a thousand other hands following after it. It's kinda cool, and it's a good indication that I need to go to bed.

Topamax is atypical for fibromyalgia (which I have been diagnosed with) so I'm guessing that I'm in less pain than I would be if I weren't on it. It's also supposed to help with migraines (but not seeing that).

Seroquel helps me sleeeeeeppppp. I love my Seroquel. Love it. Without it, I would be up every night tossing and turning with a thousand things running through my head. It doesn't knock me the fuck out like it did when I first started taking it, but once I'm out, I'm out. Yeeeaahhh.

Topamax keeps the seroquel munchies completely at bay. There is a god. Seroquel is the best AAP of the bunch for my brain. I love the stuff. Great sleep, not depressed, not manic, and less anxious. What more could I ask for?

Trazodone = instant erection (this stuff is often prescribed off-label instead of Viagra).

SSRI's = can last forever in bed

Lol. I guess someone finds these to be useful side effects. Not me though.

LOL. Yes, there is a time and a place for an erection.... like... instant erection when your boss bends over and her crack shows... NOT GOOD... Instant erection on your wedding night... SCORE!

Cymbalta has made life a haze of chilled outness; which is a beautiful thing. Also, it has oscillated between not feeling sexual at all; and feeling like a being composed of pure sex. Either of these is a pretty cool place to be...

Adderall: I love this stuff. It's an awesome nasal decongestant ... and as a consequence I *know* if I've missed a dose. Miss two and everyone knows! Otherwise, if for some reason I just can't get to sleep (or get woken up) and then can't get back to sleep ... 15 minutes, tops. Granted, it works for the ADHD stuff, but saving half my copay in antihistamines and decongestants that I don't have to carry around rocks. And I've been told I need to cut down on coffee.

bupropion, desipramine: the quality of bedtime sleep is much improved, and my breath rate doesn't drop near as much as it can into not-so-good range.

I have never, ever had a urinary tract infection on lithium.

And I get them frequently off of it.

And it's NOT just 'cause I'm manic and hypersexual, I get that way on lithium too.

Keppra: really did help with the stupids from topiramate.

Nortriptyline: urinary retention. I could drive or work for hours and not have to pee. It was great. I live in the sticks. There are no rest stops. Not a lot of ground cover, either. (It was also a good antidepressant. Sure, it made me batshit manic. But, before that, it was a really good antidepressant.)

Depakote...no migraines, no weird pseudo-reality dreams and increased libido...

actually, the increased libido is why I got off of it. I couldn't focus on anything if there was a guy in the room, that is anything except the guy.

Adderall for decreased appetite...until I just plain forgot to eat and ended up really sick (and lost my job).

Geodon...I had some interesting hallucinations, but the tardive dyskinesia made it a no-go.

I slept great on Seroquel, but I had other side effects that were not so great.

Migraines, headaches no more on Depakote. Nearly the same on Tegretol. Yay!

Sleep. I can sleep. Right now it's a little too much sometimes, but really, the ability to fall asleep when I go to bed is a wonderful side effect.

Adderall's appetite suppressant is pretty nice. I think I eek a little antidepressant out of it, too.

Vicodin is not nominally a psych med, but I remember it made me have a much more relaxed approach to everything when I was taking it. Of course it kind of softened erections. But I didn't let it bother me much.

Prozac made me lose a lot of weight, but that's not so great because it comes back.

Small amounts of ADD med (stimulant) let me sleep better.

I don't know if it's the Welbutrin or the dexedrine or just not being depressed, but there's a major improvement in the way sex feels. No more wondering "is this all there is?". More like "isn't this going to burn out my brain?". But no signs of that yet. Still, sometimes it's more than I want.
