I hate the word cocktail...

Recommended Posts

pisses me off when people use it...I can't explain why, but it is a major pisser-offer for me. Anyone else?

Maybe because cocktails are supposed to be fun??

It sort of downgrades the whole experience into a cocktail party pill-swap image, perhaps.

And as far as

[/qt what really pisses me off is people trying to placate me by saying " i think i'm bipolar too" makes me want to rip their heads off

hm. yeah. It seems we are truly tragically hip at the moment. I have had three people 'confide' in me this week that they think people in their lives are bipolar. For at least two of those people I can gaurantee you it's highly unlikely (to be polite).

Um,...nice to meet you, BTW.

"cocktails board"? ;)

Neither "cocktails" nor "meds" bother me. They are what they are. It's just short hand, much like "Fuck" is a gorgeous word on so many levels.

People claiming to be wired like me because they have ordinary moods? Yeah. Makes me wanna stab 'em with a fork. Repeatedly. And with brutal callous force. Fuckers!

So the cocktail wording doesn't bother me as much as the "I have been a little down, I think I am bipolar too" like someone had mentioned previously. That really pisses me off. I mean seriously?! Why would someone WANT this? If they only knew what we go through or the stigma we get from it. If they want it that bad, they can have my BP, because I don't want it! I wish it worked that way.

I don't like "cocktail", "meds", or even "bipolar disorder". I prefer "manic depression" b/c that describes my experience better. There's no teeth, no intensity in the term Bipolar.

But I'm opinionated and I think FUCK is a great word!

i've heard cocktail used in other medical situations before (AIDS and cancer communities especially). but i kinda like the silliness of the title of this board anyway - i'm all for integrating as much humour as possible into all this nightmarishness! being depressed and way too introspective, it reminds me to lighten the fuck up.

i hear people who work with medication say "meds" a lot. when i was in charge of medicating clients, we always said "meds" instead of medication. my nurse friends say it a lot. but in the general population, i think you're right - most people don't say "meds".

as for me? i'm just glad to have to type four letters instead of ten. ;)

I just love it (NOT) when people are like "what's it like...how do you feel when...have you ever..." like I'm some kind of circus sideshow act. I don't mind talking to people who are genuinely interested, but I haven't really met anyone who isn't just seeing it as an "Inside Edition" moment...their entertainment fix for the day.

How about 'meds'? It seems mostly used for MI drugs, whereas 'medication' is used for most other illnesses it seems, or least in my little bubble of the universe.

I've heard cocktail used occasionally with other illnesses so it doesn't really peeve me.

Actually, the first time I ever heard the term "cocktail" used was in reference to H(ighly)A(ctive)A(nti)R(etroviral)T(reatment) for HIV/AIDS in the mid 90s. And I had already been on several of my own meds for about 6 or 7 years. I usually use "meds" because of that, actually, because I think of HIV/AIDS "cocktails" as being so much more arduous to take.

A mixed batch of mood-altering chemicals combined with various fillers and mixers, possibly dangerous,

served with the intention of helping the imbiber function a little more smoothly in a social

group of mixed company.

With or without alcohol, it's a cocktail.

Edit: Besides, I'm sure it's tastier than a petrochemical stew.

as an alcoholic I dont like to mix my metaphors (between liquids and pills although I am on liquid prozac at the mo ;) ) so I dont use the word 'cocktail'.

My mother administers my meds and she just bluntly says in her County Armagh accent "here's yer drugs" when she gives them to me.

and i think 'bipolar' is a milquetoast, wet fart of a word to describe the condition. I'm glad I can say "Im schizoaffective" (though Im not glad I have the condition obviously) the 'schizo' makes them go 'holy christ!' and the 'affective' makes them go 'huh?' Splendiferous!

i guess it doesn't bug me as it bugs others. but maybe that's just because i don't really care a whole lot about the words used to describe something. "a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet" type deal. and words only have as much power as you give them. cocktail, meds, whatever you call the pills that keep you brain from going batshit... maybe that makes me the oddball. but i'm ok with that.

I also have only heard it for HIV treatment plans and for pain control plans people also have "cocktails"

I like cocktails in glasses with a garnish

but when I need them I ..take my drugs

for me meds is just a short term for medications and never used as a nurse with any bias I promise! it is just how much of a hurry you are in and how long your line of patients is ..as to what choice is made ..meds is four letters ..medications is ..you count them!

I like the term "cocktails" a ton better than "happy pills"...... seriously do I always look fucking happy to you? Gesh

I'm pretty sure the next time someone says, "oh your on happy pills..... -or-.... did you take your happy pills?" they will be getting stabbed with a spork. (Did you guys have sporks in school??? Half spoon/Half fork)
