netsavy006
I've been on atypical antipsychotics for 2 years now and I still don't have diabetes. I find that to be a good thing but what does one do when the atypical antipsychotic starts to affect blood sugar (hyperglycemia / diabetes)? I don't want to go off the one I'm on now because it's helping my visual hallucinations but I know that diabetes is an important issue too. What do you think about all this? (atypical antipsychotic examples are Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperdal, Invega, Geodon, Abilify, Fanapt (fda approved but not hit market yet) , Saphris (newly marketed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder))

tryp
I think you get tested regularly and otherwise don't worry about it until it becomes an issue. I've been on Seroquel for a year and still going strong
Velvet Elvis
It can help if you stick to a low carb diet. I wouldn't worry about it until someone else tells you it's a problem. I gained over 100 pounds on Seroquel before I let them talk me into going off it because of the weight induced diabetes risk. Personally, I'd rather be functional and diabetic than disabled and not. Phoenix_Rising
I have diabetes II and have been taking Seroquel and Geodon. As long you get your blood tested every few months I don't think you need to worry.
