i just started 600 mg seroquel xr. i've gained 3 lbs in as many days. and i'm unhappy about it. massively unhappy in fact. i worked so hard to not be fat. i developed an eating disorder. i just recently stopped throwing up my food on a regular basis. i'm really hoping it's just water. that's what i keep telling myself. "it's just water weight. you can't actually gain three pounds in three days eating about 1800 calories a day. it's mathematically impossibly. it's just water." but i'm still freaking out. i'm unhappy it. so these are my questions in regards to seroquel and weight.

is it a metabolism thing or a hungry thing? does the seroquel reduce the rate at which you metabolize calories or does it just make you want to eat more. i cant find the information out there. i just need to know if i need to cut my calories down to compensate for a metabolism thing or prepare for being excessively hungry. because hungry i can deal with.

how much weight have others gained while taking seroquel?

i'm already feeling better. today i managed to sit down and be productive. i got some school stuff done. but i can't handle being fat. i used to weight 240 lbs. i dropped to 160. i currently weight 170. well 173 as of today. due to the recent change. but i've maintained 170 for the past 10 months without much effort. i cant stand it. at all. i cant gain any more. i can't. i won't. but my knees cant handle cardio. even the elliptical. i lift weights. i eat well. protein heavy. loads of fiber. some carbs. not enough vegetables but i try. i try to stay away from sugar. and bad fat. i only eat fish and chicken. no mammal. but i'm terrified of getting fat. but i already feel better than i did three days ago. when i was attempting to sit in med guy's [nurse practitioner] office twisting my scarf into knots, rambling on and on... manic and agitated.

are there other atypicals that cause less weight gain than seroquel? i just dont know much about them. and the PI sheets are greek to me at this point.

It might be an adjustment thing as your body is getting used to having a new drug thrown at it. If it's taking away the mania and anxiety, I'd try to focus on that as much as humanly possible. I know that's easy for me to say and hard to do...but imagine how bad that could get instead.

I haven't handled Seroquel weight gain, but I likely had some due to Risperdal back when I was on it. It seems to be part of the AAPs. I found that for me at least, it was that I lost my ability to tell when I was hungry and when I wasn't...so I really had to pay attention to things like portion control and to just try to eat at regular times of the day. It seemed to counter it a little bit. That plus exercise.

he thought seroquel wold be the best option due to the fact that i was so agitated and the sedation was something that a really needed. i'm one of those who actually needs 10 hours of sleep at night. if not 12. not sleeping through the and not even being able to get to sleep was a big issue. but it's something i will discuss with him if this trend continues. i think i'll give it say, two more days. if i hit 175, despite cutting my calories back and flushing my system with water to hopefully mitigate the water weight thing. because that is just unacceptable.

Seroquel can both change one's metabolism, and increase appetite. All the AAPs CAN do it, to various degrees.

That said, I am on both seroquel AND risperdal, and have just lost 20 lbs. It can be done, with the right strategies, provided you aren't just out on the far edge of either water retention, or metabolic syndromes....

The two AAPs with the least chance of weight gain are probably abilify and geodon. Neither of them are NOTED for packing on the pounds, but it can happen. Both of them often tend to be less sedating, but honestly, it depends on dosages and a whole lot of other factors. It might be worth a try since weight is a sensitive issue for you.

I'd talk a lot more with the doc about it and assess your options.

i wish i could take abilify. i tried it once about a year ago and within 48 hours i was have massive visual and auditory hallucinations. i don't know if it would be worth trying again. i'm eaten enough hallucinogens to not be afraid of hallucinations but having then when i know that i've not eaten hallucinogens... just kinda made me uneasy.

monitor and be careful is the name of the game i guess. i'm still freaking out. because having to monitor more than i do already [scale every morning, rough running calorie count daily, gym twice a week, abs and push-ups at home...] means that i could get really obsessed. and fall back into patterns that are unhealthy. but i'm not gonna let it happen. because i've come so far with the ED thing. and i'm not going to fuck this up. because winter is shitty enough as it is.

maybe i'm just freaking out needlessly. because 3 pounds in three days is... well... to anyone who doesn't weigh themselves daily, unnoticeable. but to me it's a bit deal. i'll see what happens in the up coming day and call med guy. he wants to hear from me regardless... worry worry worry.

anyway, any more input from other would be greatly appreciated. anything in particular you've done to mitigate the weight gain [other than the standard portion control/diet/exercise] would be greatly appreciated.

A low carb diet can help. It can interfere with your glucose metabolism is ways I don't fully understand. Avoid pasta, bread, sugary foods etc. An Atkins or South Beach type diet isn't a bad idea.

I wouldn't make drastic changes in your diet until you see significant weight gain though. Just a few pounds could be normal fluctuations for whatever reason and are nothing to get worried about.

I gained over 100 pounds on seroquel and they still had to pry it out of my hands because I liked it so much. I saw the weight gain as worth it. Of course I only made half-assed efforts at exorcise and didn't do a thing to change my diet.

the breakdown of protein takes more time and energy than does the metabolism of carbohydrates.the protein has to be broken down into sugar first and then into ATP. Carbhydrate are sugard and can ust be broken donw into ATP. something like that i think... if this weight stuff continues i will be giving that low carb thing a try. apologies for the dummed down biology... i kinda needed to rationalize it for myself. i hat atkins style low carb. but high protein, high fiber, low carb seems like a good way to go to beat the weight gain.
