xanax vs xanax XR

Recommended Posts

OK, here is the situation. I have been taking Xanax for about 2 years. My dose increased during the two years until I ended at 4mg daily. My pdoc is making me tapper it down to 3mg daily. I am fine with this because I know I have to eventually get off Xanax. I am having a extremly hard time going from 4mg to 3mg. I am just used to popping one when I need to. My question is - has anyone been in a similar situation and switched to Xanax XR to tapper down? It just seems to me that it would be easier with XR....please share your experiences with this.

THANK YOU.

No, I haven't been in the same situation. However I switched from regular xanax to ER about 4 years ago. I love it. IT is the difference between yoyo'ing up and down all day long and chasing the tail with more pills every 3 or four hours. Instead I take one tab, and it's pretty much good for 12-14 hours. Rarely do I take a second one. IN the end I think I take less.

You can't split the ER tabs.

Do keep working to reduce your usage. Take holidays when you feel ok, or try to hold off taking the next tab for even half an hour or hour.

Good luck! a.m.

Xanax is a bitch to withdraw from. Maybe you could ask for some valium to help with the withdrawal process as its long acting and often recommended when ceasing a short acting benzo....

Yeah hit up the Ashton manual, 1mg alprazolam = 20mg diazepam. "Xanax XR" (brand of extended release alprazolam tablets) are crazy-expensive ($3 each!), and really, quite pointless (why be on alprazolam if a longer-acting medication is needed?).
