lilie
Does sugar increase mania? I am on zyprexa and remeron and am forever wanting to eat but when I eat a lot of sugar I go a little nuts. Is that the standard sugar crash and burn that everyone experiences or is it related to starting a mania in me? I ate a crapload of cookies a couple of hours ago and am shaking and had to take a lorazepam. Jeez but do I need a better diet. Lilie
doghappy
I wish I could really answer your question but I don't know the facts. That said, it makes sense to me - sugar is a very powerful substance. What type of sugar does it? Any type or is it limited to corn starch, etc.? rhiannon
It's possible your blood sugar is fluctuating, which can do bizarre things to your mood and energy level. Sometimes the blood sugar plunges a couple of hours after eating sugar. Symptoms include shakiness, muscle weakness, disorientation, anxiety, headache, nausea, etc. If that sounds familiar, try eating a bit of peanut butter or something else with protein in it. If you are reacting to sugar this way, it may just be your metabolism but talk to your doctor if you can to make sure there's no underlying cause. Don't overdo the sugar, but if you must have it, eat something with protein at the same time as that can even out how quickly you digest the sugar. Dweii
I get high from sugar too. Don't know if it's hypomania or just a normal sugar rush. Sorry I can't be of more help.
sepia
I've been known to go on trippy weird sorts of sugar highs, for certain, but I can also spend days in my living room, at one with my desk chair, eating sugar from the bag or slurping jam from the jar, and I doubt I'm hypomanic then. The main thing I can count on from sugar is a desire to eat like tomorrow marks day one of a mass famine. I don't know how normal sugar highs really are. Wasn't there some study on sugar and hyperactivity in children, done at birthday parties, where the parents reported that the sugary drink had made the children hyper when in fact it contained no sugar at all? I don't remember where I heard about that, or who did it, but it's an intriguing thought.
