switching from seroquel to trazodone

Recommended Posts

i'm in the process of switching from seroquel (which i've been on 7 years at 50 mg) to trazodone to help me sleep. right now my plan is to start the trazodone and go down on the seroquel to 25 mg. i tried it last night and have been real tired all day. i read on crazymeds.us that its not really a good idea to combine them, but it also said that the hangover effect from trazodone goes away in a couple of days. so i was going to try this combo for at least three days and see if the trazodone hangover wears off at all. has anyone done this before? i'm a little leery of just dropping the seroquel cold turkey becasue then i think i'm gonna have to start another atypical antipsychotic to replace it, and i don't want to add those side effects in on top of everything else. eh, i'm not really sure about my decision making process, but i'm the kind of person who hesitates over every single med change, and this is hard for me. just wanted to see if anybody else had experience in this, or has any advice about trazodone.

how much trazadone are you taking? i used to take trazadone as a sleep aid with my current dose of seroquel. i do find that 25mg of seroquel have me a really nasty hangover, but 50 did not..so it might be the 25 seroquel. i didn't have any hangover issues with trazadone at 100mg..

interesting. i'm taking 50 mg trazodone. i hadn't thought of the lower dose causing the hangover. i'm on day two of this experiment and last night i had pretty horrible sleep - in the non-ending dreaming sense. i've had pretty bad sleep for awhile now though. my usual pattern when i had disturbed sleep was to wake up at 2 or 3 to have to pee really bad, and then fall back asleep just enough to continue the dream, but feel like i never went back to sleep. and that's what happened last night. i told myself i'd try it for three nigths and see if the grogginess from the trazodone wore off, but maybe i should just try the trazodone alone

well this combo isn't working very well. i've had some 'better' sleep some nights, better in the sense that i feel more rested and have a slight sense of well being when i first wake up, even though i haven't necessarily slept longer than before. but i'm quickly stressed by my parents and my normal morning irritability, and i'm groggy for the first 2/3rds of the day. and i can't really rely on caffeine to wake me up, because i have to avoid it. so somethings gotta give. i'm not thinking trazodone is the best medicine for sleep for me, but i really don't want to go back up on seroquel. i can see what dropping seroquel alone will do for me, but i don't think that trazodone alone is going to give me that much better sleep. we'll see.

My psych doc has me on a combo of seroquel and trazodone....but only because my sleep issues are so extreme. I'm on 50 mg of seroquel, and up to 300mg of trazodone....it's up to me to determine. I usually only take 100mg, or 200mg if I'm really having a hard time falling asleep. It works like a charm, however I'm not very....with it if I get woken up.

Certainly makes going downstairs to use the facilities in the middle of the night interesting....lol. Especially when you have a cat obstical course.

I'm sorry you are not having much luck with trazadone. I have been on it for about a year at 150 mgs. I have never had any hangover effect.

Hi Folks,

I've been on the Traz for about 3 months - my script says 200Mg at night - and was put on Seroquel also about a month ago - script says 150Mg at night. Knocks me right out without too much grogginess in the morn. Cup of coffee fixes me right up. And I feel better than I have in years. The combo works great for me and have not heard anything negative about mixing them. Also take wellbutrin in the AM. Being treated for depressive disorder and insomnia.

I'm going back to college in a couple weeks (I'm 51 :-)) so I'm starting to taper both of the night meds down so I will hopefully have a clearer head and better memory.

Would like to get them both at around 50Mg, as long as they still help at that dosage. Been using a pill splitter and dropping about 25Mg each week. Am down to 150Mg for the traz and 100Mg for the Seroquel.

Not really knowing how my brain will process information after 30 years away from school has me a little apprehensive, but excited at the same time. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's experience as far as psych meds and school.

Take care all!

I'm on 200mg Seroquel at the moment, but it's becoming less and less effective. I'm only getting about 3 hours out of it, then in and out for the rest of the night. Might give this stuff a shot.

I used Ambien for 8 years, but I just can't cope with the sleepwalking any more. Or the memory loss.

Unless you actually have schitzophrenia, you want trazy for sleep not seroquel. Low dose of saeoquel vs. medium dose of of trazadone for a non-schitzo = normalcy for anxiety related sleep disorder. Seorquel will keep you zombied all day, trazy at a reasonable does will raise the serotonin and melowtonin (sic. On purpose) just enough to give you good sleep. Experiment with the dose - too much will keep you just as drowsie as the seroquel. If you are truely schotzophrenic (hearing voices, etc.), I implore you to take your meds so you and/or your loved ones don't get hurt. Peace and good luck with this rediculously advanced brain we have.

That's seems fucked. You need to have a serious discussion with your psyche.. Don't hide anything from him or her or else you won't get the help you need. Nothing will be on a permanent record - physican / patient privledge is real -- US laws suck abot a lot of things, mental health issues however do get the appropriate respect.

I couldn't tolerate the day-after sedation and lethargy with Trazodone. Even on 25mg the next day I was a zombie. I switch between Lunesta and Ambien CR for sleep. Lunesta has less memory loss issues and less psychosis if you don't lay down right away (Ambien CR has made me bat-shit-crazy a few nights my husband informed me- I either hallucinate or get very agitated and angry). However Lunesta craps out on me very quickly (3-5 weeks) and then I go back to Ambien CR.

Sometimes I wonder if I really do get to sleep with Ambien CR or if I just can't remember how I slept. But then again physically and mentally I feel better after a night's sleep with Ambien CR so I guess it works ::shrug::

PS: I've went without both drugs for extended periods of time without tapering down and experienced no withdrawl or anything. But I think I'm lucky in that respect because I can stop cold turkey with a med and physically be ok (AAPs and mood stabilizers are different because stopping them will cause my mood to go crazy)
