papertrees
I've gained 20lbs since my discharge from the psych ward. I exercise regularly and I watch what I eat religiously. I do not understand. I take 10mg Abilify, 150mg Lamictal, 2mg Biperiden and 100mg seroquel for prn. How much metformin is usually taken? And is it before or after meals? How effective is it? Thanks. notfred
500 to 2000 mgs a day is the usual range. I see most folks who post about Metformin and AP's are taking the max, 2000 mgs. Metformin is very effective in reducing insulin resistance and therefor blood glucose levels. If AP's cause insulin resistance Metformin is going to be effective in lowering blood glucose levels. Some report weight loss when taking this drug, I dropped a lot of weight when I started it. At the very least it should get elevated glucose levels down, which is a good thing it itself. Metformin is well studied and has been around for a while, at least long enough for it to have gone generic. That makes it really cheap. It is usually the first line med for Diabetes II. It is very unlikely to cause low blood glucose levels. Metformin can cause GI upset so it is taken with meals, usually in 2 doses a day. A slow titration can be key to not getting GI problems. nf
