I understand that Artane is similar to Cogentin in that it's an anticholinergic, but I'm getting side effects from Cogentin (3).

1. Urinary hesitancy (difficulty starting the flow)

2. Dry mouth/throat (may be contributing to the swallowing problems)

3. Have to "force" just to do #2.

What I'd like to know is that if my pdoc approves of switching over what might my Artane dose likely be? I don't want it to be too high if we can avoid it. I'd be using Artane for the same reason as Cogentin (muscle stiffness, restlessness)

Thanks,

Andy...

I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to point out that the side effects you're complaining about also occur frequently with Artane, so there may not be much point in switching. Also, out of the universe of possible side effects, the things you're talking about don't really seem so bad. Just saying.

I take 4 mg of cogentin (2 in the am, 2 at night). I was told the only side effect I would have is dry mouth. HA! Since I drink 200 ounces of fluid a day from the lithium, I think that side effect is probably masked, if any.

But Andy, knowing you, if there is a 1 in 1000 chance of a side effect, you'll get it. Or obsess over getting it until you stop taking it.

If it makes you feel better, it takes me 4 minutes to pee in the morning because it takes me awhile to start. Then it stops. Then it dribbles for about a minute. And I'm a woman for Jebus sakes! And I'm pretty sure it's from the meds. But as long as I can still pee, I don't worry about it. It's just like my hand shakes. I simply don't get manicures any more. Problem solved!
