New Drug - Valdoxan (Agomelatine)

Recommended Posts

My pdoc recently told me about a new drug recently acquired by Novartis for testing and FDA approval called ‘Valdoxan’. It’s been creating some hype in Europe and really seems to be helping patients suffering from depression, anxiety, etc. Seeing as I’ve been especially having a bad time with all the SSRI’s I've tried, I thought I would look into this “new kid on the block.” And I am happy to report it that it looks promising. (I really have to stop reading medical journals in my spare time…)

Agomelatine a.k.a. Valdoxan is only available in Europe right now BUT it has been acquired by American giant Novartis. (yey!) (Agomelatine is currently undergoing phase III clinical trials in the US (super yey!)

It now has to make its journey to FDA approval but that could take a couple of years).

The drug is as a ‘norepinephrine dopamine disinhibitor (NDDI)’ - Now that’s a mouthful…

In recent studies, (See first link.) Agomelatine looked to be better than 'my pals' Sertraline (Zoloft) and Paroxetine (Paxil) due to the lack of sexual side effects, discontinuation side effects and because of its unique profile, Agomelatine has not been associated with weight gain and even improved sleep quality! (Sounds good to me…) There was no daytime drowsiness either…

I know it’s Christmas and it’s a tough season to begin with… So if you’re having a tough time with your SSRI like me… perhaps there’s hope for something better soon?

It is really quite new, gaining approvals in Scandanavia and the UK over the summer. I trust that there will be a big push for fast-track approval here. The novelty is all the buzz. There haven't been any significant head-to-head studies yet, so the jury is still out in terms of efficacy. Still, it's a new agent in a market that has been terribly Serotonin-centric. Time will tell..........

In the meantime, the most comprehensive summary of information I've come across yet about this med is at The Mac Guffin blog (chekhovsgun.blogspot.com). Pry your head out of the journals for a moment and have a look at that site!

Valdoxan (agomelatine) is available in Europe now but it won't be in the US until at least 2012. I've been taking it for 8 weeks. It's been ok but not as great as I'd hoped it would be. I've read a lot of people's experiences and the results are similar to mine. Mixed results.

I'm sticking with it for now. 3 months is the minimum before I'd pass judgment.

I have just startede taking \valdoxan (agomelatine). I have been on it for one week now. WOW. What a godsend. If you can get it, try it...no side effects. My sex lefe is back. I feel great...not numb or tired like when on other SSRI meds. God bless Servier.

It's popular here in Thailand marketed as Thymanax. It's even in a few american style advertisements with the mopey looking but perfectly made up woman deciding to ask her doctor. Good old fashioned Wellbutrin's doing the job just fine for me, so it's not on my to-do list. But glad to hear it's helpful for some!

I would love to try this when it comes out in 2012, unless I find that Parnate works for me (too soon to tell). It may eliminate the need for a sleeping pill, and I would love to get my medications down to as few as possible. Sounds promising.

Hi Lauren,

Well I think I've been on 25mg for about 2 weeks now, and the last few weeks haven't been great for me, so I don't know how much it's helping. As usual, they say give it a couple of weeks to kick in so I guess I should be feeling something different about now, but I can't honestly say I am ;). Saw my pdoc this week and he has told me to increase to 50mg, so maybe that will make a difference but I'm also changing over from carbamazepine to quetiapine, so not sure really what will be doing what! However, in terms of any sudden feelings of happiness etc I can't say I've experienced any :).

Have you been prescribed this?

Vicky
