GroovyGwen
So I have a new pdoc and she's at least 80. My life's been sucking lately due to a bunch of things, and she brought up changing my meds. She said I should try Seroquel. OK - I have and it put me into a coma even on a low dose. But whatever I'm down to try anything. So THEN she says she would put me on Seroquel and take me OFF everything else??? Lamictal 400, Effexor 300, Abilfy 2.5 - and 1 med is supposed to take the place of this? I really don't think so. I'm thinking about seeing another doc, I don't trust this chick. Is there any way y'all think seroquel could take the place of my 3 current meds?
AirMarshall
sure, why not? It's not unreasonable to reduce other meds. Stacking four or five meds makes it pretty tough to figure out what is working and what's not working. a.m.
lluvia_z
A good scientist knows that you should never change more than one variable at a time to see what happens to the system. I'm a physics teacher who teaches future doctors and I try to make them learn this, if they learn nothing else from my class. I know when I'm talking to a less than good psychiatrist when they're willing to make two or more changes to my medication cocktail at once. --lluv
recoverymouse
yup, my pdoc got super pissed when I went off two meds at once. he says never change more than one at a time because that's the only way to get an inkling for cause and effect of each med. it may be that one drug can replace three, but I think he would replace the in-kind meds first (AP for AP for instance), then he would taper me off each of the others over a period of several weeks, one at a time. SashaSue
That's a lot of change at once, esp. since you've previously had a less than great experience with Seroquel. It couldn't hurt to get a second opinion.
