Low dose Zyprexa-Will I still get Fat?

Recommended Posts

;) Hi everyone, I'm new here, name is Chris! :)

I am taking Buspar, Depakote, and I forgot to mention (in another post in another section) 2.5mg of Zyprexa a day at night. I just started the Zyprexa yesterday. I had taken it before for a few weeks (5mg) and then switched to something else becuase I was afraid of weight gain. My question is do think that I'll gain much weight even at my 2.5mg dose?  Maybe I should start eating nothing but salads again!

Thanks!  :P

I had a long talk with my pdoc about this.  I wanted to know what made you gain weight.  Was it increased food intake, or decreased metabolism?

He said that it was most likely both.

If you are terrified of gaining weight, be working out!

That is all I can say.

I have been on 5mg of zyprexa for  a few months.  I think I definitely gained some unloosable weight, but it has stopped gaining.  I haven't been gaining and gaining, just gained about 10-15lbs over and then it stopped.  Also, I don't find the danger of over eating.  BUt I have never been one to use food as a drug.  If I feel hungry but don't eat, the hungry sensation doesn't get worse unless I haven't eaten in a long time and realy do need to eat for sustenance.  Hope this helps!  Andrew

I've been on Zyprexa 2.5 - 7.5mg for about 8 weeks and have only gained about 5lb in that time (and the first few weeks are apparently when you gain the most weight). I do get hunger cravings and small binge-eating sessions, but I limit the damage these can do by generally having healthy food around. If you only have raw carrots and celery in the fridge, you can avoid binging on carbs!

If cravings become too much of a problem, something you might want to do is ask your doctor about is taking some Chromium supplements. There are several forms: Chromium Picolinate (most common), Chromium Polynicotinate, and GTF-Chromium. They are supposed to stablize blood sugar and help improve insulin function.

I wonder if those Chromium supplements could be used as an antidote for weight gain from some of the drugs.

I gained about 10 pounds in 6 weeks and today told my pdoc that I wasn't going to take any more of it. So I'm back on Seroquel 200mg and the carb cravings are much more tolerable for me on it.
