Psylocke
Yesterday marked my first week on Seroquel. I was due for my period on the 3rd. My body is always like clockwork and cycles every 29 days. The only times I have been even a day late is when I was pregnant with both of my children. I took a test yesterday and it came back negative. I was wondering if anyone know if Seroquel can cause amenorrhea or if anyone else has experienced it while taking Seroquel? Also, if it does come back I am pregnant are there any side effects of taking it while pregnant?
sorrel
Well, you're getting a little ahead of yourself when your period is only 2 days late. Technically it isn't called amenorrhea until you miss 3 months consecutively. True amenorrhea with antipsychotics is usually associated with hyperprolactinemia, but Seroquel does not typically cause that effect. So no, it is not a common side effect. I think you should wait a little longer before concluding that anything is wrong. If you're pregnant, you'll have to reveal that to your psychiatrist and the two of you can reevaluate your treatment plan. Seroquel is sometimes used in pregnancy. But I couldn't tell you any more than that.
LindaNoggin
My period has always been affected by my psych meds. I will go up or down on a certain med and my period will go from being regular to being late, early, lighter, or heavier.
Bex
I don't think it's common, and I don't know the science behind it, but I haven't had a period since I started on Seroquel in September. I've been avoiding mentioning it to my GP, partly because he's a bloke (I know, stupid reason!) but mostly because I'm worried that he'll want to take me off it, change it, whatever, and I feel so much better on it that he'll have to prise it from my cold, dead fingers... Has your period turned up yet, Psylocke?

Has your period turned up yet, Psylocke? Hi! I also take Seroquel and so far I've missed one period. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I also do not want to stop taking Seroquel, so I haven't said a word to anyone.
rowan77
I take seroquel and my periods are all over the place.I usually get one every 8 - 10 weeks. Last time it was 11 weeks and when it came it lasted 7 days and I got another one a week later I don't know if this is seroquel related. It could be other meds either?? (see below) For approximately two years I've been trying to figure out why I've stopped getting my period, even though I'm in my mid-30's and have a child under the age of 5. I've been on 150mg of Seroquel for approximately two years. I'm now in the agonizing process of withdrawing from Seroquel*, and for the last two weeks I've been down to 50mg. Two nights ago I skipped it, felt so horrible yesterday that I took a half (25mg) around Noon and then 25mg at 11:30pm. Today I have my first period in approximately two years. What do you think? None of my other meds (which were blamed for my amenorrhea) have changed. I hope that this side effect will be looked into more carefully! I've been worried for years that something was seriously wrong with my reproductive system all of a sudden, and NO ONE, not one of my four doctors even suggested that it was the Seroquel! *I know Seroquel can seem like a wonder-drug for many people, but please do some research into the experiences of people who have taken it, ended up with serious health issues and then found out that withdrawing from it is worse that coming off "drugs". I'm not saying don't take it, but please make sure you know the risks, as most doctors prescribing it don't seem to!) Note: My "Captcha" for this post was "yesterday weirdest", LOL! Hi Jill That is VERY interesting!! You just don't know what's going on with these medications. They can work wonderfully to stabilise mood etc but cause such adverse effects to stop menstruating for 2 years!! I too am going off it. I was on 600mg and am now down to 200mg, and hopefully down to 100mg when I see my pdoc on Wednesday. I hear that the final tapering to a low dose and eventual discontinuation is very difficult!! Guest Steppy
I have taken seroquel for three years and only had two periods in that time. I've tried to come off it but when u finally get to a really low dose you cannot sleep. I don't mean poor sleep I mean absolutely NO sleep. That lasted about three days and then I had to go back up to a higher dose just from sheer exhaustion. It's worse than getting off heroin.

I took seroquel for approximately 4 months and immediately stopped having my period as well. i have been off the med for 4-5 months and still no period but negative pregnancy tests every time i have taken them. this is very weird. i also gained weight while taking but now I am losing weight after discontinuing and almost back to my normal weight. my mom has taken this med for years and said she has never felt better. and it helps her so much. I am concerned because of the side effects and the recent news about serious health problems people are facing after taking seroquel
kcpurplehope
have your prolactin level checked. i lost my period and it was because my prolactin was through the roof. high prolactin is a big side effect of seroquel. however, in my case it ended up being from a different med that was never taken into consideration because the answer was always, "its the seroquel. deal with it. you need it to stay sane. goodbye." Guest Katie
I have been on Seroquel and Seroquel XR for approximately 3 to 4 weeks, and am now 7 days late for my first period while on it. I have also taken 8 pregnancy tests, including one done by my doctor, and all have been negative. 8 might be a bit much, but I need peace of mind! I really do believe after reading everyone elses posts that this a side effect of the Seroquel. Am a little worried about the weight gain, as prior to starting Seroquel I'd lost 34 pounds through hard work, and I don't want to gain it back! Guest Nadia23
hi to all the above seroquel users with period issues, I have been taking seroquel for appox 1 year now. I have been on very high dosages. A one point i was on 900mg per day and still got my period however, it was very light and brownish colour. To this date i am now on a lot lower only 300mg per day. I too at first thought it was the answer to my sleep issues and psychotic symtoms as well as mood. I have gained 22kgs till this date due to seroquel. I have missed my first period and i am not pregnant! I am going to my psych tonight to see what can be done about this. it seems as though as good as i thought this medication was at first now it seems to be working more negatively than positively for me. I am left in a tricky situation due to the fact that i have exhausted all over medications that do not cause significant weight gain. and being overweight is not something that i want to be at the age of 22. I have been diagnosed since i was 18 and still feel that no antipsychotic is working properly. Like mentioned above it seems to be wrking well mentally but psychically it just doesnt agree. Thanks for all above comments!

Anna
All AAPs can cause hormonal weirdness to one degree or another I believe, but I am slightly talking through my ass here. I know risperdal DEFINITELY can, never had that problem but depakote is the one that does it for me. Talk to doc, then a good ob gyn who is going to give a shit and some tx advice. I didn't menstrate for 2 years once, went to an OB and she said, "Eh, that's just the way it is with some of those meds. Don't worry about it." Don't worry about it? I... guess. I didn't have any insurance at the time, she was one of those sliding fee scale ones. I plan to see a real gyno now that I'm going from not bleeding at all to bleeding every day. Fortunatley I have insurance and a good PCP network now, so they actually Do give a Shit. Anna
Guest claireabelle
I am pleased that i have read these comments i started seroquel in nov and due to various reasons my cpn agreed it was not working. Among other side effects my periods had stopped i had put alot of weight on around the middle and my bust was really painfull and had increased two cup sizes. My doc is arranging blood tests for prolactin but a week after stopping seroquel(coming off it quickly my energy increased with each day)my period has returned. My doc said she has never come accross anyone whose period had stopped taking seroquel before but it is a relief to me that they are back.I have now started Lamictal and feel great. Guest faith08
Taking Serequel can caused missed periods. In fact, it is a side affect - now granted, one of the "less likely" side effects. I have been taking this med for over 8 months and haven't had a regular period since on my own.
