What in the Hell is Causing me to Sleepwalk?

Recommended Posts

I've been on the [pretty much] same cocktail for months, and suddently over the past month I've been sleepwalking every single night. My family has caught me standing at the top of a flight of stairs, in front of the fridge eating, trying to get a makebelieve bottle of wine from a makebelieve basket by my bed.... you name it, I've done it. I've tried to get dressed, the whole works.

Thankfully, my family very gently wakes me up until I realize what I'm doing is a dream. But it's really disconcerning and a bit freaky. I'm especially scared of fallind down our twisting flight of stairs (no, it's impossible to put a baby gate on them, they are really artitechturallly kid unfriendly.

The only thing new in my cocktail in the past year is cogentin. I've been slowly ramping it up from 1mg a day to 2 mg a day to 2mg twice a day.

Any ideas?

Anti-Parkinsonian meds can certainly do it (actually, all your rx can, I believe), as can hyperthyroidism (and bad GERD, if you're my aunt!), and I would bold, underline, and italicize recoverymouse's apnea comment...

Can your GP refer you for a sleep eval? May could probably tell you more about that.

Can you put a basic safety latch on your bedroom door, perhaps? Or something that will make a sound when you leave your bedroom and wake up someone else in the house? Not a car-alarm type sound, something relatively quiet...

And don't discount the anxiety you cite regarding knee surgery just a week away. Stress/anxiety are frequent precipitants to sleepwalking. At least in kids, and I'm confident you are younger than me. PM me if you want suggestions about your surgery (help from one of the Great Big Talking Heads may be necessary). I've had lots of procedures (nothing bionic, yet) and may be able to give some guidance. And I'll underscore the above comments regarding your safety. Never mind the babygates. Your focus needs to be closer to your bed and bedroom door. We don't want you having multiple orthopedic surgeries!
