We discussed benzos for a while, and I have established that docs do not use xanax over here. The psyc did howver say that lorazepam has a higher potential for abuse than any other benzo that is prescribed in the UK. Well, he said that it had the highest street value. Temazepam is good for sleep. It may work against anxiety, but do you really want to get the "sleepy" effect during the day ? Lorazepam is usually not good as a sleep med. Unless you need something to relax, reduce worries or fear. I've tried it myself, and on me it had little effect. If you don't have a history of abusing drugs/alcohol and neither does your family, don't worry. If the benzo really makes you feel good or causes a craving, then there may be cause for concern. gracelikerain Posted September 1, 2005 Share Posted September 1, 2005 hmm..i definitely don't think ativan has the highest level of abuse out of all benzos (then again, i've never snorted anything-but i can see what tigrre is saying and understand how that would make it, in some ways, easier to abuse) i think a lot of doctors, p-docs, fact sheets, etc say completely different things about which benzos are worse/more known for abuse/etc. i used to think it was valium..now i hear that it's xanax (the one i'm on). when it comes down to it, they're all benzos.. they all are things that are fast acting, and people tend to need more and more for them to work when i was on ativan, there were times when i took a bit extra, and for the wrong reasons. but i was also very unhappy in general, felt misunderstood, and was prone to that sort of thing. i think the important thing is being aware of your own attitudes towards meds (understanding that if they don't work well enough, taking a bit more than prescribed is not a good idea w/out informing your p-doc), tolerance for unpleasant feelings, anything that could make you prone to addiction (even if it's not a full blown addiction but just overdependency, etc).... i think if someone's going to become an addict, or even a semi-addict, or overly dependent on meds.. the difference in addictiveness between benzos is not as relevant as the person's underlying issues if you truly don't see yourself as prone to abuse or misuse of meds, i wouldn't be too scared about ativan. however, in general, you might want to read a bit more about benzos..as they can be very difficult to get off of, and you can easily build up a tolerance..even if you don't have addictive traits i think which benzo you're taking isn't too much of a big deal compared to the other things. As others have said there are better things, but if you need a calm me down prior to a speech or interveiw then this may be the drug to use, as it only seems to have drowsiness as a side effect. Take it for no longer than 1-2 weeks at time and at least the same in between. allow from 1-2 hours for it to kick in prior to a freak out situation.
