Hi Maggie,

40mg seems like a lot to take at once! I started at 10mg, then upped it to 20mg (occasionally 30mg).

Ritalin has a short half-life (is that the right word?) in the body, and from everything I've read, it's better to space out smaller doses (and increase individual dosage as necessary) rather than taking a lot at once. Unless you can get the extended (slow) release version.

Check out ADD/ADHD meds on Jerod's Crazy Meds page (click on the crazymeds.us icon thingy at the top of this page) for more info.

And, of course, talk to yer doc. Hope you can work this out and feel better!

My OCD and GAD go bonkers if I take a stim without somthing to control the anxiety.

I've found that 100mgs Seroquel at night does the job fairly well.

Is the ritalin the only med you are on?  How many times a day do you take it?

40mgs is a lot to take at once if you haven't titrated up, giving your body a chance to get used to it.  You might have better luck with a sustained release formulations such as concerta.

  • 2 weeks later...

I tried for 2 months to take Ritalin (for ADD), and just couldn't hack it myself.  Although it really worked fo rmy focus, the anxiety and panic were uncontrollable.  Plus I was only taking a very small amount,..typically .5 mgs, 2-3 times a day.  Even w/ taking xanax PRN, it still personally was not worth it for myself.

Good luck,..panic attacks are just the scariest.

edited to add the meds I was taking while trying the RIT:

300 mgs of neurotin, 3 times a day

150 mgs of Wellbutrin, 1 time a day

.5 -10 mgs of Rit, 2-3 times a day (I tried even just taking it 1 time a day and still it caused too much anxiety

.25 mgs of xanax, 2-3 times a day
