HyperInHell
Hello to everybody. Know what? All those other mental health message boards on the internet are full of people who are 30+ and no have idea what it's like to be alive during the millennium. I never even bothered to register at them, because it always felt like the only thing I had in common with those people was that we are all going through what is now considered mental illness. It is nice to have found this place. There was a time when I turned mental illness into some sort of countercultural trend. Crazy revolution! I even wrote a piece called "The Insanity Culture's Manifesto." There was also a time when I rejected the notion of mental illness entirely, and claimed that the people who were referred to as crazy were actually the people who were the true sane ones. I even went as far as saying that crazy wass the next step of evolution, and that in order to go beyond the human state you would need to become what society refers to as insane. Now? I just want to stop this war in my head. While I have been diagnosed with enough labels to start their own country, my main diagnosis is schizoaffective. I personally think labels are ridiculous though. How are such simple terms supposed to define such complex thoughts and extreme ways of viewing the world? I am a fringe writer, experimental musician, and vagabond. I am here to get advice on medication, which I have finally agreed to take (mainly just to make things easier for myself) after years of preaching about it being used to brainwash the mentally radical. I am also here to gain and provide support. Nice to meet you guys!

Spart
dude, I cant agree with you more! I also have these theories about mental illness especially shcizo stuff. To me its merely a heightened state of awareness, I myself dont currently have those issues(they havent boxed me yet) but a lot of my friends have. Funny thing is that they are all artists or genuises..... Anyway I just found this site as well and am also a muso(Bass) ....the reason for my being on this site is that i've just been diagnosed with bipolar and the doctors reckon it is linked to my epilepsy etc. Good Luck! Ocracoker16
Welcome, I am in the under 30 category. I really like this site, because it has such a diverse population. I learn a lot from older posters who share what it was like when MI folks were thrown into institutions or just made to forget about education and work in jobs that were far below their capabilities. I am glad to hear you are taking medicine now and I hope you find what you need here. Katie
HyperInHell
"I also have these theories about mental illness especially shcizo stuff. To me its merely a heightened state of awareness." That's exactly what it is, I think. My take on it is that it only becomes a problem when your delusions control you as opposed to you controlling your delusions. wifezilla
I am not MI, and I am over 30...but I act like I am in my 20's...does that count? "it only becomes a problem when your delusions control you as opposed to you controlling your delusions" That was the problem with my best friend's son...he is schitzo-effective and tried to stab his bio-dad, and had threatened to kill his step-sister and brother. He had to be institutionalized, but is doing much better. He is getting stable on meds, will graduate soon from their high school program, and last time he had a melt down, he only wanted to hurt himself instead of his family. Small step, but an improvement.

Trust me i think the meds have helped a lot ,I wouldnt even be allowed to drive had i not got the epilepsy under control. I guess society isnt very accepting of behaviour that deviates from the norm eh? Just look at attitudes towards gay people, women, people of colour...they label them as 'previously disadvantaged',I find that quite patronising. And to top off the list if you have MI well now you are labeled nuts and we need to treat you as 'special' .Well i think its a load of crap!!You just need to look at history and some of the great minds that contributed so much in the field of science, art etc..
